Can anybody advice me on using better topology for creating an electric socket? What I am using at the moment quickly became a mess.

Make a loop cut all the way around as shown below and slide it closer to the edge to sharpen the rounded edges framing the front face.

You could also try and select the edges in edit mode you want to be harder and use the crease tool (shift+e).

Depending on your topology this might not work, but if it does you can cut down on the amount of vertices resulting from your subsurface modifier.

The crease tool is the best tool for sharp corners. You can also find it in the transform tab. If set to 1.000 there is maximum sharpness and the subdivision surface should not have effect.
