Submersible project (New animation added! 04/19)

Hey gang!

I started this thread over in Blender General…but since I am now starting the modelling and posting some previews, I decided to start a new thread here…

If you want to see the old thread:

https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64754

anyway…

working on modelling a underwater sub based on a real life sumersible for a larger scene… less that a 1/4 way thru modelling it…

Stopped yesterday to read about HDRI and decided to try it out…

Please leave your crits and comments!

Thanks a bunch!

Cujo

That looks really nice! You say only 1/4 done, but it looks fine. What are you going to add?

Well it is based on the real life submersible “Clelia”

http://www.hboi.edu/marineops/clelia.html

So there is quite a bit more to be modelled

Will keep you posted!

Added a few things and worked on material…

Let me know what you think…

Cujo

New image all…

Kinda large…but would REALLY like some feedback on this…

(image removed for space)

Thanks for looking…

Cujo

I like the model and the materials. The pressure hull still looks a bit too angular, maybe the tube needs to be refined.

By the way, I think the drop shadow on your latest images kills the 3D-effect, it would be better to show the model with a rendered shadow or just don’t use a shadow at this stage.

Looking forward to see updates.

Ok…

Took a break from the Clelia to start modelling the HBOI other sub, JSL II.

these things are pretty fun to work with and model…

Anyway…here is a short 360 around the new model.

Crits and comments GREATLY appreciated!

Have a good weekend!

The rudder looks either transparent or is too shiny IMHO.
Sub looks great though…
(referring to the pics above).
quicktime 360 is really good, but the shimmering on the “torpedo launchers” is funny…set smooth/multiple faces issue maybe?

Great work Cujo31! Keep it up, I like it.

Maybe add some underwater lights?

Here is a nice open source program to get caustics of water if you need it:

4 stars from me.

Hey Gang!

Just wanted to update everyone on the project. I am working on the manipulator arm for the sub now.

I rigged it just with tracking and empties…

However, I would like to have tubes etc… how is this achieved?

If a certain part of the arm can only extend… say 60 degrees… is there a way of setting this in a constraint?

Anyway…

here is what we have so far…

Thanks for looking!

Cujo

The link doesn’t work for me (404). Too bad, I’m enjoying watching your project develop.

If a certain part of the arm can only extend… say 60 degrees… is there a way of setting this in a constraint?

If a bone is part of an IK chain you can select it in Pose mode and in the editing context, set locks and rotation constraints on the bone.

sorry about that CD38…

corrected the link… it should work now…

Cujo

the link works for me >.> in mozilla right click and save link as…

My Computer is humming away on a new rendered update… as soon as I get it done, I’ll post up a image for ya…

Cujo!

Ok…

So I started rigging my lights and with a LOT of help from Fligh%, I got my robotic arm rigged…

I know I have a couple brackets with normal problems along witht he cylinder on the bottom hatch… and I am NOT happy with the glass material :frowning:

How are my spotlight/searchlights? Any suggestions?

C&C please!!!

thanks!

Cujo

Ok Gang…

New image and question…

First the image:

http://www.clintonville.k12.wi.us/misc/lights_test.jpg

Now the questions…

I have been trying to use a single vertex as a halo for glow and a spotlight with “halo” and a tracking constraint to line up the beams…

My question… does this look right?

Is there a better way of doing this?

As the beam of light passes across my “nerf bar” on the front of my sub, shouldn’t I see a break in the light? Kinda like playing with a laser in a smoke filled room and running your hand thru the beam???

Should the lights be stronger or am I close???

Thanks gang… I tried doing a search but got really frustrated trying to find something like this…

I awould apreciate ANY C&C and help with this…

Hate to be a pain in the butt… but this is one project I REALLY want to get right…

I appreciate you helping me out…
