Subsurf not the same as max's turbosmooth

Hi all, new to blender but have been using 3ds max and a little bit of maya for years. I’ve taken a break from 3D as couldn’t use max after university. I’m now getting back into it and am having a little bit of trouble, in max there is a turbosmooth modifier which essentially adds loads more polys. The thing is I’ve seen people suggest the subsurf modifier but all this does is smooth the mesh, not add polys. is there a way to do this? thanks!

You simply apply the Subsurf modifier once you’re through shaping your geometry. Alternately, while in edit mode, you can highlight your mesh, right-click, and select subdivide from the pop up menu.
