Subsurf vs Edgespit- Which to use?

Hello, I’m having trouble deciding whether to use subsurf or edgesplit modifiers on my models. I’d like to listen to other people’s advice; when and where to use each of them?

Subsurf adds geometry and smooths and rounds your model out, making it more organic.

Sometimes, you want to keep some sharp edges. For example, if you want to turn a rectangular prism into a cylinder, you’d just get a spheroid if you were to apply subsurf to it. With edgesplit, Blender will try to decide which edges to ignore. In my example, that wouldn’t work out to well, so you’d have to manually mark the wanted edges sharp with Control E>Mark Sharp.
