Subtitles for Sintel

I’ve created a Hungarian translation and sent it to Ton (Roosendaal), who forwarded it to somebody and it got posted at http://subs.macouno.com/?file=sintel_hu.srt. In my version I’ve translated Scales to it’s Hungarian equivalent “Pikkely”. Later I’ve found another good Hungarian subtitle (created by somebody else prior to mine) and the translator use the same name (“Pikkely”).

I guess that I’m not the only one who thinks that Scales should be translated.

I’ve checked the already uploaded translations (subs.macouno.com) and all subtitles for languages of Latin-derived alphabets kept the original “Scales” name. To conform to the current rules, I’ve created a version of my Hungarian translation, where the dragon’s name is kept as it is in the original subs (“Scales”). I’ve uploaded the SRT here: http://hotfile.com/dl/73466002/b28f75e/sintel_hu.srt.html

PS: I’ve found that some of the SRTs use single-byte encodings, some use UTF-8 and some use UTF-16. It seems that there’s no rule on this aspect of the translations, so I’ve left my SRT as it was (single-byte, ISO-8859-2).

The dragon’s name is translated in Russian too.

Thanks müzso, I’ve downloaded and uploaded your latest version.

Poet… it’s just a rule the team came up with, it’s a “name”… so we keep it, but don’t worry about it, it’s not too big a deal, we can keep the russian one as it is.

btw: Ton is forwarding all his emails about subtitles to me, so posting here is basicly the same thing as sending to him, but his inbox is already crazy full, so posting here is a better idea.

Here is it in Danish: http://www.mediafire.com/file/uqj8wjvza7l0h65/sintel_da.srt

one of myfriends checked my subs, and corrected/changed some sentences to sound better. And he also wanted to translate Scales, do I’ve done it. I think, when that name is translated, people will like Scales more

The Swedish version got some spelling errors. Here is a corrected version, and a corrected version with the name Scales translated to Fjäll. The word is for what fish and reptile skin are made of, and also means a high mountain. But on the other hand scales in English has a double meaning too.

** Greek subtitles for Sintel **

Hi guys,
i just saw Sintel and it is a brilliant work,
the artists, developers and all the team
that put it together did a great job!
Now to the point, i have a little experience
with subtitles so i translated it in Greek (Ελληνικά or in capital ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ) .
I tested then and it works fine.

If you want put it in the youtube as an option
and in the site for downloading.

Anyway you can grab it here:

You did a great job guyz.
Keep it up.

Greetings from Greece.

Just want to say that in the swedish translation I kept the dragons english name. A direct translation worked quite good, but the:

“You are lucky your blood is still flowing”

Sounds a bit weird in swedish. There is no real direct perfect translation to the word flowing. So it would sound like this if it was a direct swedish to english translation.

“You are lucky your blood is still pouring.”

I didn’t want to change the meaning of the scentence so even though it sounds just a little bit weird I kept it. Otherwise I’m sure the swedish sub is 100% accurate

@Sim88 What spelling errors :o:eek: wait let me look through it again…

Ahhh yeah my bad I used some weird words. I didn’t spell anything wrong though! That version is 100% accurate!

Hi all. I’ve upload the Ukrainian version of subtitles here: http://depositfiles.com/files/67ljzbctq
It would be nice if you put it in the youtube as an option
and in the sintel.org for downloading.
Greatings from Ukraine. You’ve done excellent work. Keep doing.

I know that gatekeepers is “привратники” in Russian, but “хранители врат” sounds better. I tried to translate word for word. If translate as work of art than we can change some words of course:

Your are lucky Your blood still flowing - Тебе повезло, что ты ещё дышишь - Your are lucky You still breathing.
Scales - Чешуйчик - pretty good.

Others think good enough.

what I did
spelling corrections
[unprepared] oförbered -> oförberedd
[Hey sit still] Hej, sit stilla. -> Hej, sitt stilla.
[What brings you to the land of the gatekeepers] Vad för dig till port väktarnas land -> Vad för dig till portväktarnas land

translation corrections
[a kindred sprit] En godhjärtad själ? -> En tvillingsjäl? (a kindred spirit is not the same as a kind spirit)
[these are dragon lands. Sintel] Detta är en drak lans, Sintel. -> Detta är drakarnas land, Sintel. (he’s talking about where the spear is from, not what it is)

aesthetic change
[blood’s still flowing] Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande rinner. -> Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande flyter. This can be debated, neither of the words are perfect.

Thanks for this greatest Sintel, i really love it…and here is Indonesia subtitle http://www.mediafire.com/?ikqt6627bv2474u i’ve check it many times, it’s accurate from language to punctuation, but still maybe there is other indonesian people will make it more accurate

Only to make things more confusing, I’ve fine tuned the swedish translation further:

I think it looks better to localize the “word plays” the way I’ve done, but of course it’s up to discussion.

[unprepared] oförbered -> oförberedd
[Hey sit still] Hej, sit stilla. -> Hej, sitt stilla.
I think you downloaded the first version I uploaded, I had corrected that when I edited the post.

[What brings you to the land of the gatekeepers] Vad för dig till port väktarnas land -> Vad för dig till portväktarnas land
Yeah my bad…it’s not gate keepers…but gatekeepers.

[a kindred sprit] En godhjärtad själ? -> En tvillingsjäl? (a kindred spirit is not the same as a kind spirit)
Yeah my bad…

[these are dragon lands. Sintel] Detta är en drak lans, Sintel. -> Detta är drakarnas land, Sintel. (he’s talking about where the spear is from, not what it is)
Yeah must have had a problem hearing what he said for some reason.

[blood’s still flowing] Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande rinner. -> Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande flyter. This can be debated, neither of the words are perfect.
Yeah this was the one I was unsure of. But I think in the end flyter sounds better.

Rinnande vatten - YES
Rinnande blod - NO
Rinnande lava - NO

Flytande vatten - NO
Flytande lava - NO
Flytande blod - YES

I think rinner as in pouring is used more when the liquid is pouring down something. Like a river or if blood was pouring down her shirt. Blodet rann ner för hennes jacka…when it’s not pouring down something it’s simply floating.

And the blood vessles aren’t necessarly pouring down. The blood is floating around inside you. But still I think that scentance sounds really weird in both english and swedish.

*You are lucky your blood is still flowing…
*Du har tur ditt blod fortfarande flyter…

People don’t talk like this…

A good idea would have been to start from the English subtitles, that way you’re sure what they are saying. Youtube actually did an ok job in auto translate the subtitles to Swedish, funny thing was that it translated Scales differently each time, both “vågar” and “skalor”

I took it from the link in the topic.

I think it works because he is a shaman or something, he has just a few lines and sounding a little odd like that fits him, imo.

i found som minor typos and a word which was not correctly translated in the swedish subtitles.

the corrected file can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?0hvxdphffcjxfgq

the tranlation of the word “flowing” (currently translated to “flyter” in the file i specified) could also be altered to the word “Stömmar” which would fit better in a swedish conversation.
However, “flyter” is the correct “Direct” translation of the word.

BÖLJANDE
FLÖDANDE
STRÖMMANDE
FLYTANDE
RINNANDE
SVALLANDE

Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande böljer.
Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande flöder.
Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande strömmar.
Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande flyter.
Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande rinner.
Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande svallar.

Out of these there are only three that could work.

-Rinner
-Strömmar
-Flyter

Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande strömmar sounds awful. Du har tur att ditt blod fortfarande rinner also sounds weird since blood doesn’t pour. Flyter is the direct translation and personally I find that it sounds better.

If all you changed in that last translation was the flyter word then I don’t think it’s a better version tbh. You should go with sims version macuouno.

EDIT:

I looked over your version and…

Du är närmare än du vet.

That is how 4 year olds would speak. Can I haz tha cookie? It’s not much of a improvements…take this Macuouno. It’s Sim’s version…
