Subtracting shapes

First off hello, I hope I don’t come in and drown everyone with too many questions, but there is one I haven’t been able to find in any tut’s help files or searching forums. Does blender have an option to subtract a shape instead of just adding one in? I ask this because my first experience with any sort of 3D modeling was using unrealEd and one of my favorite feature was the subtract, I could make a block and if I wanted a hole in it I’d just make a cylinder and subtract it out of the block, it was one of the most used features for me. Thanks in advance for any info.

Sure it has: Booleans http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/PartII/Booleans

Thanks, but now I got more reading.

I’m not sure if this is proper on this forum so if not let me know. I have another issue to go along with this, after reading up that wikipedia article I gave it a shot but for some reason blender just freezes up. Is there some way to fix this?

Blender’s booleans are fussy, it likes clean, solid or hollow meshes. In other words, Ctrl-A on bothe meshes so the scale and rotation are equal for both; Remove Doubles and make sure that there is no internal or loose geometry; if the objects are flat Extrude them to make them solid (like extruding a plane into a cube), do the boolean and then delete the extrusions; do Not use Subsurf Modifiers until the boolean is done; try to have roughly equal subdivisions on both meshes.
