Suggest a good IM program

I wanted to get into instant messaging, but I have no experience with any of the software available. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good IM program to use.

Thanks.

I use Gaim. http://gaim.sourceforge.net.

I have some friends who use Trillian. I just use plain old MSN Messenger, but I don’t spend a whole lot of time instant messaging anymore. Text messaging is where it’s at.

I also use gaim…
my only problem is that the file transfer never seems to work for me…

as for trillian… used it and thought it had a buncha great features… and most of my friends use it too… something just didnt sit right with me though…

I did use GAIM in the past but now I use Miranda for connecting to the standard networks. However, my daily IM-tool is now Skype.

I’ve been using Trillian, but I can’t send or receive files with it.

Trillian.

on linux, hands down, Gaim is king, on windows though trillian actually works better, though any one of the individual clients, like MSN, or Yahoo are good, though for AIM, i would still prefer GAIM or trillian as far as windows goes…

Gaim, I only wich file tranfer could be better, and there could be video and voice chat…

i use gaim, the only thing i don’t like about is it, you cant add an irc server and connect to it, but you have to join what ever #channel you want… you cant seam to add it as the irc account. that or im doing something wrong.

File transfer just takes a minute or so to actually start… but works fine - however it is frustrating. i just upload stuff and link to it usally.

If you want ridiculously light:
