I sculpted this “sun”, and I want to put some sort of glow around him. i tried a sphere with various ray transparency settings and translucency settings and it never lets you see the face, just the rough outline of his head. Is there a more subtle way to achieve this?

Have you thought of maybe rendering a separate ambient occlusion pass, and then composing both images in the node editor?
