Surprise Tank Meet

Just wanted to have go at the sample file from the Grass Essentials pack from BlenderGuru and came up with this. Thinking I might possibly add in a blast / smoke effect but we’ll see. I think I might need to turn up the number of grass particles a little too.

That Sherman is ded. Liek so ded.

The Sherman did okay in Fury didn’t it? Haha
But yeah this one’s dead as!

Update with the makings of smoke:

This thread is going to be interesting. I feel a lotta power of this. Maybe I would like to improve this with few tips:
Most important:

  • The color of smoke is a little bit different, then when you actualy look at image. http://i.imgur.com/M2eGLKj.jpg?1 - example
Just tips(if Iam wrong, OK. You have your idea - just that it looks like World of Tanks and not like reality):
  • german tanks were camping and defending to the end of the war, so I would give him into forest, but Maus never actually fought so, everything is possible  - Fury was a pure fiction, Tiger would never go out of the good hiding spot.
  • is it a IC version of the Sherman? Because the rear of the turret and the “trapdoors” look a bit weird to me, but maybe it is just an angle.

Thanks cergina, I completely agree with all of those points! Smoke has never been my strong point with internal so yeah that’s something I’ll definitely have to work on. And yes my model is based on the Sherman Firefly (IC) but I used a bit of creative licensing on the rear of the turret. I just felt that a rounded look for the “trapdoors” suited the curved shape of the turret better than than hard boxed lines of the real version.
I like your idea about the Maus hiding in the forest but would it still be visually appealing? Historical accurate absolutely but yeah not 100% sure about the visual of it. I think a test render may be in order

So ded.

That aside. Looking good! Although too clean. That grass need some mud and tank tracks. Stones, fallen trees maybe some planes on the sky. Simple war things. Also it looks too bright as in “today’s standards”. More washed out look would serve it well.

And that Maus is so going to murder that Sherman.

Oooh yes good point. I’ll definitely be adding those to the list of things to add / do to the scene.
So here’s some small progress from some of the advice. Still a lot of things to add in as mentioned in the comments above but I will get round to them bit by bit. Basically I’ve changed the treeline and desaturated the image. While this treeline does look better (thanks cergina!) it’s highlighting the low poly-ness of the nearest trees so I might have to redo one or two higher poly ones.
Also I’ve added some mud/dirt being flicked off the back of the treads via a particle system but it’s hardly noticeable so I think I’ll do some dust with the smoke sim instead.

EDIT: Do the trees look a little out of proportion now? Just noticed the empty space above the Maus.

Your gun flash should be yellow I think - see this video:

Just a small observation…

The new lighting scene has much more atmosphere. I like it.

So I’ve fiddled around with the smoke sim a lot to get more of a fiery blast than previous. Also added in some dust behind the Sherman, and added in some tank traps. I’m not sure I like the look of the tank traps through. Dunno whether it’s their location or shape or texture or what. Anybody got any further ideas / suggestions?

Maybe just to see the scene from different angles. Dont know how would it look if you would put the camera on lets say 1,6m height? It is all about testing and playing with it.
