im for both, i want the game im playing to be surrealistic, but i want it tobe be realsitic to the point where it can express the surreal environment in as a realistic way as possible. i want to be able to relate the outside world to surreal enviorment, to make it seem as if our world took a surrealistic turn.
i like surrealism, but some realistic games are really top notch,(Gran Turismo,Grand Theft Auto,SimCity) but i don’t think any game can beat going outside to hangout, skate,or anything away from a screen.
Heh, well if any of you are familiar with some of my work, I think you already know my answer.
Though, I think the poll should be changed to ‘stylized vs. realistic’, as PlantPerson suggested, since this whole topic is more-so about stylized graphics.(ie, cartooney and surreal fit under the term, ‘stylized’, atleast from a gaming perspective)
I find the community reaction to this poll pretty funny though…
about 70% say they prefer stylized, but I would say atleast 70% of the users within the community strive for some form of realism or some other been-there-done-that style.
I Think the mixture is very important. in order for it to be surreal, it must be realistic in the first place. Take Half-life 2 for example. Realism is a major strong point in the game, with the advanced physics engine, the great texturing job, and the characters-which speak for themselves-. Without this, the game would just be another alien FPS. But it’s that realism which really makes it Surrealistic. I fell as if i am inside the game whenever i play it, and i feel like “Wow! if i couldn’t see the edge of my TV screen and the bag of Cheeto’s on my lap, I would actually believe I’m fighting a 20ft tall walking Sitckpod!!” it’s that feeling of realism being throw together with something fairly out there that makes a game seem surrealistic.
But the original point i was trying to make is would do you like Mario style games, where you jump on a cartoon turtle’s head and coin pops out, or GTA where you snipe a person and a shower of blood appears.
But i like where this is going, so continue…
Surrealism in general (although I sometimes create realistic images. But the fact that you can have something that’s unrealistic but not surrealism or abstract is a whole different topic.) But if you’re talking about games… it can be cool to experience something that you could do in real life but is way to dangerous. But it’s cooler to experience something that you can’t do in real life… so, surrealism.
