finally buckled down to learn some tricks with the internal renderer.
just some minor level adjustment in photoshop after rendering.

blender internal, about 20 minutes rendering due to the arealight samples.

dunno if this should be posted here or in some other ‘testing’ forum of sorts. im decided to put aside external renderers for now and see what i can get out of the internal renderer.

Direct light covers so much of the mesh that’s it’s kind of hard to see the SSS.

Can you post a more dramatic effect with the light directly behind the monkey or something?
