SVG Textures

This could be considered a feature request, or just me asking for a plugin. :stuck_out_tongue: Anyway, I recently discovered that SVG files are WAY better than PNG any day, and I wanted to know if there is a plugin so I can use SVG files as my textures. I know you can import SVG as Mesh, But I do not want it as mesh. I would much rather have SVG textures instead of converting them into PNG files… Does anyone know a solution? I think I found a texture importer a while ago, but it was for Blender 2.4 and I couldn’t figure out how to set it up… :stuck_out_tongue: Here’s the link.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried importing a SVG into Blender? A lot of information is either ignored or lost. At this point, I believe that even if Blender could use SVG as textures, the results would be undesirable. I want the same as you. Beautiful things can be done with SVG but Blender just isn’t up to the challenge yet.

Sorry.

If crisp textures are your concern, just export your UV maps at a higher resolution. The default is 1024x1024, but you can go pretty much as high as you want. I’ve had really good results with 2048x2048 without a significant increase in render time. I start to see an undesirable increase with anything over 4096x4096, however.

I see the same. I do most textures in png 1024 or 2048.

I found transparent PNGs had artifacting from time to time, so I switched to transparent TIFFs. PNGs without transparency work fine, but since I wanted to use a single format for all texture/bump map/normal map files, transparent or not, I found it simpler to stick with TIFF.

Also, Blender will handle 16-bit/channel TIFF whereas the PNG format tops out at 8-bits/channel and I like the extra colour depth.

I used to believe that SVG were ‘better’ than the other 8 bits, but realized that it was really the gradients that they are painted with. So I learned more about gradient painting than brushes, etc and now pngs work alot better than before. SVG has got excellent curves and edges due to the beziers but you can do the outlines then use gradients in any bitmap paint program,
I prefer PaintNets gradients they are more versatile for me.

If you adjust tolerence for re-selecting a gradient painted area you can paint gradients over gradients and have good looking
results.

there was a project to use svg as textures,

loooooong dead.

IT’S CALLED THE VECTEX… :ba:
