Switch to 2.8

Should I switch to Blender 2.8 now or wait for its official release? It is great but I am not getting used to all the changes in it. Plus, it is somewhat buggy too. Like EEVEE glitching when I render. Another bug was when I select circle select tool, it never reverts and just stays on.
So, was curious about when should I make the shift?

Plus, the short keys have seemed to have changed a lot.

If you don’t want to put some effort into getting used to the changes, then you will probably be waiting for eternity, since things are not going back to the 2.7 way

Guess I better get started, eh. But still, the thing that bugs me the most is the circle select bug.

If you are certain it’s a bug, you can report it, and it will get fixed soon:
https://developer.blender.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1

You are not forced to use Circle Select tool through toolbar or pressing several times W.
You can call it by pressing C Key and quit it by a right click as in 2.79b.

If you are fine with 2.79b and want to wait 2.80 documentation to learn, you can.
There is nothing wrong with not wanting to be a 2.8 test subject.
You can wait a stable 2.80 that would be easier to learn without encountering bugs about basis and with support of a documentation.
You are free. You are not forced to help by testing and bugreporting.
If you feel like you will post more invalid bugreports than useful ones, it is better to try to help another way than reporting bugs.

If you have some mega important add on that you can’t live without, I’d say no,

if not, go right ahead, might as well get used to the changes early

That only makes sense for changes that are supposed to last.
And there is no evidence of that for many things. Icons, Names may change ; new tools, options, features modifying the workflow may occur during following months.

If it means learning a temporal change that would be replaced by a better one, one month later ; it could just have been a waste of time.

If you want to test beta, it means that you are ready to give a minimal feedback on it or past time searching info about it.
It means that you are ready to take time to say : “I approve that change” or “I disapprove that change, it must not stay”
or to ask : “Is this a bug ?”, “Is this feature missing ?”, “Is there something planned for this lack ?”

It is unfair to presume that every blender user have time for that.

i got the same problem here XD.All i need is sculpting, retopo, create UV,and export my assets.Sadly Im unable to open up my 2.79 file using 2.8 so i just go straight with 2.8 hehe.

It’s not a question of “either, or”.

You can use both versions, to an extent even on the same project (unless there’s some very specific 2.80 dependencies). You can use Copy/Paste between the 2 versions. CTRL+C in source window, CTRL+V in target window. I had done this even on a professional project.

If you see yourself using blender in the future (next couple of years), then you should definitely start using 2.80! Start with smaller personal projects.

2.80 is going to be killer once it’s released. You’ll eventually make the switch for sure.
Thing is, a lot has changed and you will have to relearn and adopt to some new concepts and things. Also, if you’re anything like me and you customize a lot you will need time to make it purr. So the sooner you start playing with it, the sooner you will be comfortable and make all needed customizations.

Even if things change along the way (and they definitely will), it’s easier to figure that one change (especially knowing what it was prior), then learn everything.

I found it hard to use 2.80 initially. For one, I can’t use blender in vanilla state. But once I made the plunge and started reconfiguring everything, I’m at a point where I’m not looking forward to booting up 2.79.

So YES. Take a deep breath and take the plunge

I think we need a sticky for this one. It’s natural that people are confused about whether they should embrace 2.8 now or later on. With 2.8 its a new age for Blender that will bring a lot of change in the way we perceive Blender in general.

So I suggest to moderators to sticky the thread with most replies on the subject to avoid the creation of duplicate threads or asking the same question over and over again to get almost the same answers.

Just jump in, and start figuring out how to make it your own. Some of the new shortcuts are super sweet, and I find that there are some “basics” missing (like set origin), but the good news is that it’s super easy to customize these, and change what you don’t like. The one that I could not get used to is using alt-A to de-select, so I changed the A key to toggle the selection every time you press it, like in 2.7.

The shading pie, while not a new concept, is very useful in 2.8. I also now use the views pie a lot, if you practice a bit with them, you can use them very quickly. One adjustment is that x-ray view kind of replaces the wireframe view. Wireframe is still there, but x-ray is a bit faster, and you don’t need to go into wireframe as much.

Collections are really awesome, and really makes you realize how goofy the previous layer system was. The biggest improvement to me is the viewport UI, you can very quickly access a bunch of viewport controls, in a way that’s pretty intuitive.

The UI really grew on me too. It is so cool. And the thing I waited most in 2.8 was the EEVEE render engine but it seems to be glitching on my laptop. Render getting all pixelated. Anyway, did they remove the background images? I know you can add it as an empty object but it just is not the same.

There are some new options in the image properties panel that should imitate the 2.79 background image behavior

I’ve fully switched to 2.8 for a few months now, and it has really grown on me. The first few days felt like this…

… But if you hang in there, you’ll discover that a lot of changes are for the better.

I’ve written an article about the changes. Maybe it can help you adjust.

It´s great that users are writing lists of changes, but don’t forget there’s an official release log:

https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Release_Notes/2.80

:joy::joy::joy:

with blender 2.80 we have all become new users:

veteran blenders found themselves in an almost new program so they are new users

the newbie see for the first time a 3d program and obviously they are new users

those who come from other programs, such as maya, xsi, c4d, lightwave, 3dsmax etc … find themselves as new users

2d painters and 2d animators are new users

soon with the next versions of blender, with better snapping tools, precise modeling tools for the cad all the engineers, architects and makers … will be new users

when you say destiny … blender is really a blender
:cyclone::cyclone::cyclone:

I didn’t like the first interface change. it was looking nicer but tooks 1-2 years till all essential add-ons and sripts started to work properly.

Now it’s just another software altogether. It does have a few nice features but everything I loved about Blender since 2004 is gone now or buried so deep inside I wasn’t able to discover. Specifically what was super efficient hotkey based modelling approach and view port interaction.

I have to use 3d max at job and spent quite a while to make it feel more or less like Blender. Now Blender itself represents everything I hate about Autodesk soft .

5-6 years ago Blender had an edge over 3dmax in many areas. It took Autodesk few years to close the gap and advance what were in Blender only initially to a new level. UV tools and interactive arrays for example. So there was a good reason to learn Blender. Not just because it’s free. Now I have to study a new program again but for what sake?

I very much hope somebody would continue old UI branch

I’ve been using blender for 20 years
and I can safely tell you that you are exaggerating …
in 2-3 days you can reorganize into blender 2.80 and you will discover the advantages … at the last is rewritten by blender developers …

Yeah, I admit I did slightly. After a day of adjusting hotkeys and interface colors It almost there. So it’s not so bad as was my initial impression. I tried 2.8 brunch last year when it still had the old UI and kind of puzzled why the change? I like all other new features but why spoil what was already good.

We had convenient tool palette on the right , poly-counter on the top, all logical , convenient and in one place. Now my eyes have to wander through interface corners to find where the parts of what were in one place before. And do extra clicks.

Same as with Autodesk soft things are not working till you find where devs hid couple damn checkboxes which were right in same pane and in front of your eyes before. The old UI wasn’t perfect in that regard too BTW but now it’s even further.

I bet all the cool addons from blendermarket , Textools etc are not working due to this UI switch and who knows how much time we would have to wait till they are working.
