im trying to make a sword in blender, i have most of the modeling done but can someone tell me what the best way to texture it is?

You should first unwrap it, then export the uv laypurt over to a software like gimp, photoshop etc and use image/paint in the places you need. You can also use various procedrual textures found under the texture panel.

If youre not sure how to do this I’ve just posted a tutorial on Uv mapping on blenderclassroom.com, and one covering texturing will soon come as well.
