target number of vertices

So, I’m working on my first full mesh that I play to animate and I’m wondering what is a reasonable number of vertices for animation. I know there are many, many different factors that determine this, but surely there are some reasonable guidelines.

For example, would 6k be considers a medium number or large number for animation? This isn’t for a game.

The reason I’m asking is because I’m doing retopo right now and am trying to figure out if I need to get more creative to reduce the number of quads.

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can give.

there is no limit for polys or vertices as long as your ram is sufficient (btw polycount is not pushing render time very much). the only thing you need to consider is that your preview will be slower. if your preview is too slow you can use a proxy-mesh or reduce the subdivision level for previewing your animation.
*6k is low poly for animation.
