Teeth clip through the jaw when I bend the head back enough (the tongue in some rigs)

I have a character that has a head bone controlling the movement of the head. Whenever I move the head back enough the teeth will start to clip through the jaw. I do have a bone for the jaw that keeps the mouth from involuntarily opening up as I move the head back but I can’t seem to use this to solve the problem. In some rigs this also makes the tongue do the same thing and moving the head side to side far enough will also do it for the sides. Please help me with any advice you can. I’m sure it is a simple solution and I am simply not seeing it.

There must be some influence of other vertex groups over the affected vertices; try and select those offended vertices in edit mode and looking at the Properties panel (N), Vertex Weight section, you can see whether they have some wrong group assignment, and eventually fix them up.

I’m afraid that there were no other influences of other vertex groups on the affected vertices. Moving the head too far back will still cause the teeth to clip through the chin or the jaw in general.

Could it be that the Armature modifier has ‘Bone Envelopes’ binding activated? Just a shot in the dark.

Maybe you should post a file.

We need more info. A blend or some screen caps would be helpful.

This is usually a weight painting issue. If you can confirm that is not the issue, it must be a armature issue. How are your jaw and tongue bones parented? What constraints are affecting them? Have you applied location, rotation or scales on your mesh? Does the armature and mesh have the same origin point? Are you using Rigify or a custom rig? Are the teeth and head mesh separate objects? Are the teeth parented directly to a bone or do they have an armature modifier?

A bone to keep the mouth from involuntarily opening? That is odd. I’ve never had that issue.

I’ve seen teeth clip through a jaw. 99% of the time it was weight painting.

Just guessing here until more info is supplied.

Good luck!

I figured it out. As it turns out there were other influences in the weights but it was much more subtle than the weight paint mode that I was working with. Vertex weights and the vertex weight panel was needed to fix things. It also turns out to be a much more precise tool than the weight painting system. Each has their own cases but I think I found out how useful the vertex one is for small detail work. You guys put me on the right path though so thanks.
