telebot (UPDATE 2 on the bottom)

Well, this is going to be another part of the animation i’m doing. Its a floating robot with four video screens attached to it. This is my preliminary modeling:

This is my first try at a GI dome and i think i did something wrong because i can see lots of lines and things from the spotlights. What is the proper way to set it up? IS there a proper way to set it up? How do you do it?
I took an icosphere, inverted the normals, and made it the parent of a weak spotlight. 1st render was black. I moved the spotlight and it looked like it was on the object so i rendered and crossed my fingers.

Anyways, CC if you will, both on the modelling and where i should go with it and how to set up a proper dome.

That looks cool. I am going to have to try on one of those GI domes. Also, it appears as though your normals are inverted on the bottom of your base plate. edit mode>>select all vertices of object>>ctrl n>>recalc normals outside.

modron: I don’t think it’s the normal, he used a bias of 0.010 from what I see and it (often) give small artifacts like that. :wink:

either sub divide the base plate more or crank up the Bias.

i’d sub D it, it looks like its got some jaggies anyway

thanks for the suggestions. I turned up the subsurf on the bottom and that got rid of the jaggies, still got the shadow lines however. Well, i’ll mess with the shadow settings and post another view later. Any comments on the model, things to add etc?

well i cant really tell what it is, but i’d say make the diamond thing joining to the base plate a lot bigger, its really tiny there, and ummm…

make more of a joint at the base of the arms to the diamond thingy.

thats all i have to say about that.

How is it supposed to float? Maybe it could do with some sort of hovering device thingy underneath, like a fan or something.

I (or someone else) could really use that in UT 2K3 :o

well, i added a few little things. A little geometry on the base(i upped the subsurf as well). Still more to add there though.

well, i may not have stated clearly what exactly this is so i might as well explain a bit further (and i like being a tad longwinded as well %| ). Part of the story of the animation will be a (semi-futurustic) city under attack.
Basically, this bot would normally be like a floating TV. During the attack, its floating around, displaying alerts and evacuation messages, and realtime footage of the battle. I’m going to render the animation from a fixed (panning) camera position and map them to the flat screens.
the things on top of this screen are either going to be lights or projectors (if projectors i may have to change the look a bit). Hopefully thats a bit clearer.
(eventually, it will get blown to bits though :stuck_out_tongue: )

GX, i agree that the 4 small pipes aren’t really adequate to support the bot :slight_smile: . I’ll work on that soon. I may increase the size of the main body (as well as ad some more details :wink: )

Wiggie, well, it uses its amazing powers of telekenesis to keep itself in the air, and if that fails, there are always those handy gremlins :stuck_out_tongue:
heh, the next update should have some engine things on the bottom. Nothing too fancy, it doesn’t need to mave that fast :slight_smile:

X, i’m using a bias of 1.3ish and i still have lines. I also increased shadow samples, buffer, soft. redid the gi-dome as well :expressionless: . Well, still much, much better than point lights :slight_smile: (btw your cruiser is amazing!)

drin, heh i downloaded the UT2K3 demo and its pretty fun (though all the weapons cept the enforcer seem to be able to take you from 199/150 to 0/0 in about 1.5sec). I’m not sure i know how this would be used there though.

thanks all, i’ll try to update again soon. Also can’t do it now, but i’ll search the forums for this glow plugin i’ve heard about, if it works like i hope it will i’ll definitely be giving it a workout.

Also, this is the first model i am going to try to rig, do i have to join all the parts into one big mesh or can the armatures affect several different meshes?
