temple-structure [UPDATE: Feb. 18, 2003]

I started playing with booleans the other day, and before you know it, I had carved out the inside of this temple. still in progress, I now need something to put on the platform at the front of the building…

Looking good. I’d say the seats look a bit too round. The pillars could use a bit more detail and they may also be a bit thick in the middle. It’s a bit hard for me to see the stage becasue of the shadows, but you could put a podium or some sort of alter there. The light is also a bit harsh. It’s looking promising though.

Nice, but I think the pillars in the middle block the view and kind of ruin the sense of space. Temples tend to (at least in my experience) have large open volumes. Maybe make some kind of arch construction to hold the roof up?
And I agree that the benches could use some detail work.

I agree with pofo, the middle columns have to go, they intereupt the sense of timeless mystery and space that temples have. An alter at the front would look good. Nice modeling.

RE: Pillars: there is actually a bit of detailing at the tops and bottoms of the pillars, but they are very simple looking overall. I know they ruin the view in the middle, but i sort of like the way they cast shadows down the middle.
maybe i’ll take them out but maybe I’ll leave them. arches are hard to do :frowning:

RE: benches. yeah they are too round, it’s the subsurfs. I probably shouldn’t have used them but i wanted the legs to be blocky and the seats worn smooth and round from much use. will probably redo them. i don’t want more detail on them (or on the pillars) because the whole idea of this temple is simplicity. near the platform, there are some nicer chairs, and maybe I will make a throne or two to put with those special front-row seats!
a pic of the front (special seating+platform) coming soon

Ok here’s some more pics. I made new benches. Which did you like better? the benches with the backs or without?
This shot is fromt he front, camera positioned on the platform:

Here’s a shot that gets the platform in it:

what about no benches? just kneeling mats or something? mind you, thats not much fun to model…

Cool I agree with pofo and others that pillars in the middle spoil temple a little.

I have nothing to say on pillar shape, but image looks generally low on details. I’d bevel the windows, and add rims to steps at the very least.

Benches and chairs are extremely modern, but that’s a question of style.

I’d love to see a close up of the doors.

hmmm i think you’re right. maybe i’ll add some window ledges or something. Is that what you meant by bevelling?
…and maybe some candle holders too. for the platform, i was thinking of putting a railing around the edges. I don’t want too much detail on the stairs, becaue the idea i am working with is that they are carved from stone, but that may change too. I want to keep the benches and chairs so I can have some sense of scale. When I first modelled the building, but before i added the stuff inside, i kept getting the feeling that it looked too small. adding little chairs and benches gives a sense of scale to the room, so… i am keeping SOME kind of seating.

a close up of the doors coming next, and maybe I’ll try a render without the middle pillars, along with detailed window ledges.
