Terminator 2 metal simulation

I am looking to replicate the scene in T2 when a finger becomes a metal pin.

My first thought was to do a Houdini style particle sim but I thought that maybe there is an easier way to simulate a finger becoming a very sharp metal point.
Any thoughts are most welcome.

I think the easies way is to use shape keys and mix materials when finger (or part of hand) is transforming into liquid metal.

Thank you so much for your example. Why make things complicated when they can be simple. In view of the shot, you’re right, your example does the trick, very efficiently.
