These new textures are made with terragen and Photoshop, they are much higher res than my old ones and look a lot better. Other improvement are bump and reflection mapping for the sea, better cloudmaps ect…
Theres slight PS in these images.
Oh yeah, Millenium Falcon, new planet – Can anyone see what Im building up to here?
I really like the glow effect; it really makes the planet look like it has an atmosphere.
I have two things to say:
Like GFX Idiot said, clouds cast shadows. If you could blur your cloud map and apply that as a texture to the planet’s surface (subtract maybe 25-60% of the white in the areas where it’s applied), things would look much better.
You are zoomed out far enough to see the curvature of the planet. At that level, the coastlines should have a little bit more of a fractal nature – more slight ins and outs. Right now the coastlines look like the outer beaches of North Carolina, as seen from a jet airliner.
I love the color, and your inland bodies of water look great.
Matt
EDIT: Actually, a multiply would look better than subtract. Silly me.
The atmosphere glow is pretty good but its not great. If you look at some more pictures of the earth’s atmosphere from that angle you’ll quickly see that its not always as fuzzy and blue as you make it out to be. Frequently in images its a lot whiter and color, and the edge is a bit harder. I also agree with the comment about the land needing a bit more detail…but then again all of my comments are based on this being earth, and if its not the rules can be entirely different. If thats, this is just a truly fantastic render of an alien planet, and they’re very beautiful at that. Good work
Delightful renders! I’m curious as to specifics on your use of Terragen; was that just to get the heightmap? Or did you grab an entire final render and pull that into Blender? (I’m climbing a learning curve right now for how to randomly generate an entire planet; and rendering the finished product would be way cool.)
Indeed, there are many uses for a generated world. I’m working on a railroad industry simulation, and want a world to have a realistic place to put track (no reason to have curves in your track if there aren’t mountains to go around). RPG’ers want new worlds to explore. Sim-aviators and space-gamers, too. Seems like something that just needs doing.
No, I used terragen to create the entire texture. Just position your camera looking directly down and render at a ridiculous resolution, I used 4000x4000 – After that it’s photoshop to create the colour, Bump, specular, stencilmaps and so on…
I’d do a tute if I wasn’t so busy with the gallery, maybe later
