text on curve

I always have mixed results with this. I got a feeling Im missing something.
Some times when I attempt to do text on curve the text gets all crunched toghether or the letters of the first word overlap each other. I tried making the curve I use bigger and smaller but it seems hit and miss.
Today I tried
Create some text. Hit Center New
Create a path curve. Hit center New
Snap my cursor to Text.
Snap the path curve to the cursor.
Put the name of the path curve in the “Text on Curve” box for the text.

Result, the text gets compressed to the left of the center point.

Any tips of tricks would be appreciated.

You don’t need to snap the curve at all, it could even be on another layer. Then you can edit your curve and watch the Text manipulated in realtime.

It doesn’t seem to matter what I do, whether I snap it or not. For some reason the text gets crunched together at one end.

Do you have a Speed IPO on the Curve? Do you have Spacebar blanks on the end of the text?

I dont have blanks before or after the text.
