Texture displacing a halo mesh - Doesn't

Could someone check me on this…

Made a heavily subsurfaced sphere

Made a halo material for it

Added a cloud texture and set the texture to spherical map and displace (0.6) (noRGB).

Rendered sphere appears perfectly round.

Switched off Halo - sphere is nicely displaced. Halo on - sphere round again.

IIRC, when you press the halo option, the mesh is basically not there anymore and only the verts are treated as being visible. Thus, there is nothing to displace.

You will have to make the displacement real, via a script or the displacement modifier option, and then use the halo option.

Um… Which displacement modifier would that be? I’m in 2.42. Am I missing something?
