Texture

how do you add texture to a curved surface? a pipe, or something that has multiple faces. so far, I have to add the texture to each face individualy and im sure you know what that result is… I’d like to be consistand around the curve like a flate surface would be…

What say you??

wow… typos big time! sorry!!

Okay, I found the answer to this, but have another problem. When I select the faces to be textured, when they pop up in the UV editor widow, the are about 20 times the size of the picture. This just started happenning so I did something along the way to create this. I cannoit get it back and the result from attempting to do this is very blurred textures… ??

I recommend watching an unwrap tutorial:

Thats the shit! Thank you…

just started with blender and it’s comin together great! Not perfect but as I continue, I’ll get better and goin back and redoin a face here and ther wont be a big deal. Thanks again for the help!!

instead of startin a new thread, i’ll just append to this one with another question…

How would you guys do this? or close to it… I need the insulated blanket look.

Thanks…

Start with tubes, then add edge loops etc, subsurf, sculpt a bit. Is this for a game or render? Low or high poly? Remember, don’t apply the subsurf mod. It’s easier to have the ability to work with fewer faces and verts sometimes.

well, truth be told, i’m very new to blender. Very new to 3D modeling… infact my member date here represents a week or 2 after I downloaded the trial! I dont know what it means to render yet! lol… Screw the Vase as a first project!! I’m set on making a model of the engineroom of the ship I was on 30 years ago. I do know my checker plate in the pick above is outta scale. There are a lotta openings and changing going on and plann on retexuring it very last…

If something can be made of it when I’m done, cool beans! For right now, I just want to proceed correctly and with minimal overhead… meaning too many vertex and faces. what i have so far is a tiny fraction of the detail to come. put it this way… the bildge will be almost completely covered with piping. and the areas not seen are still empty, void of equipment and coming machinery. A very complex project, and I am hoping I can complete it without crashing my PC half way thru everytime I bring it up…

I will youtube the keywords in your first sentence. The steam piping I can easily texture for effect, but the turbines and Boilers get padding, most of which are primarily flat, but I would like the fluffed cloth look. I figured i’d add an asbestos looking texture to that… Can the “Tubing” you speak of be used for creating piping? I mean if they can be manipulated easier than “e.04r.15(xyz).01” 6 times everytime I make an elbow on a cylinder mesh, well i’d be game to use em…

I appreciate your time, and as long as the mods here are good with it, i’ll use this thread as a portal…

Something stuck out here…“week or 2 after I downloaded the trial!”

Trial? Blender is free, you know. I hope you didn’t buy it!

Before you go much further, start here. Watch some tutorials - there are a lot.

lol… ya sayin that is forced habit… Down load a lot of stuff and after seeing free, the trial expires in 30 days!..

I’ll check out the tutorials at your link…

Not sure what you mean, but here you are:

my bad… I used the term trial by mistake… i got the freebie.

Okay 3 new questions…

I just noticed hitting F12 none of the texturing is showing when I render.

How do i “walk thru a tunnel”… Walking thru a door, walking under something… walk down thru a ladder openning. I’m noticing it is 3D, but on a 2D vertical plane. How do I walk from one side of my engine room to the other under and around things? Is it possible?

Is this a case of needing to actually move my camera around and render to simulate someone walking around the engineroom POV style? Even if this the case, if you want to walk thru, to the right of the big red condenser on the lower level in my pic above, to the other side of the engineroom, you can’t. you have to go up(7) scroll over and then look from the other side. I understand why this is, just wondering in games how they overcome this and bring in the 4th dimension…

I dont know if this can be answered. but my vision at this point is to simply create the project, then video tape a walk thru simulation, turning from time to time to look at various components… up ladders and thru a couple doors… if you get my drift…

You need to use materials. A lot of people just assign things in the UV editor window. Watch tutorials here: http://cgcookie.com/blender/

Shift+F to flythrough

I think you need to step back and learn some basics before trying this project. Work through some tutorials, and you’ll have a much easier job.

well, sorry, i thought that this is what this board is for. I have never seen any video/tutorial of walk thru something. shift F worked great thanks.

Yes, this forum is for asking questions. I’m just suggesting that you’ll have an easier time of it if you learn the basics, instead of stopping every few minutes because you’ve got a problem.

There are lots of ways to do walk throughs. I assume you mean real time, as opposed to an animated fly through. For a realtime walkthrough, learn to use the logic bricks to set up a camera you control with the keyboard.

7th file (Camera Look). Download it, and then use the wasd keys plus mouse. That’s a walkthrough.

okay, major panic mode…

I hit Shift+h to hide everything I wasnt working on. Then later hit Alt+h and only half my stuff showed back up. I checked over on the object list, and seen a bunch of eyes were closed. I opened them all and my stuff is still gone!! I’m spazzin over here!! What do I do??
