Textureing with GIMP / Blender

Hey everyone;

Im about to start my second project but this time I want to make much better use of textures - However I have very little knowlage on the subject. Im using “The GIMP” as the 2D Image Software and ive had a little look at it. The only thing I know how to do properly is Bumpmapping; ive been pretty succesful in that but nothing else.

Can somebody point me to some tutorials specific to texureing in GIMP/Blender?

Also I have some individual questions (Sorry if they are a bit obvious or somthing; Ive only just recently started Graphics):-

1) Is there anyway to make a texture of a certain resolution (eg. 1024x768) to a larger resolution without distorting or stretching the image?

  1. How do you specify where certain parts of the texture should go on the mesh?

  2. What are UV’s?

Thanks alot in advance everyone
