Texturing a glass surface

I am trying to texture a metering glass cylinder with graduations.
I UV unwrapped the cylinder in GIMP i draw the graduations on the UV map. Using some info from this forum i try to use the Alpha channel as a factor to print the graduation on the cylinder. I can get the printing correctly, but the fake glass of the cylinder is not coming out as i expect, it has become a transparent/translucent material.
Please any help would be highly appreciated.
