The 2007 Blender Conference Suzanne awards. Winners Announced!!!

No problem.

Also… last chance if anyone else wants a correction/name change!!! The voiceovers are being recorder tomorrow!!! so after that there’s no going back

See the very first post in this thread for updates!!!

Holy cow, that was unexpected to say the least! Cheers guys!

Just to be safe I guess it should probably be pointed out that Night of the living dead pixels was only entered in my name – as can be seen from the credits at the end of the thing itself there was a whole bunch of us involved in making it. Also, the reason we didn’t submit it via the thread is that we’re still working on getting the final version done, which will soon appear at http://www.nightofthelivingdeadpixels.org/

In the meantime, those interested can check out the production blog at http://tehosekoittelu.wordpress.com/ (in English/Finnish)

Ooh, wow, it’s starting to sink in now! Thanks again!

Wow!
Indeed, thank you guys!
After some heavy drinking last night I woke up to the sound of my phone - message from crckhtlr (jussi). Suddenly I was completely sober and feeling hyper.

thanksthanksthanks!

Ohh!! It’s the first time in my life I win anything!!! Really!!

Thank you so much guys!!!

Thaaaaanks!!! Woooooow!!!

Theres only one thing that bothers me. Dont you think that this is strange, that the film that won in the Best short film category isn`t finished yet? I mean, I have nothing against people that made it and enjoyed watching this film as well, but I think it should have been rejected from the competition, made finished and submitted next year.

edit:
One more thing. Ive also been nominated, but in the Best designed short film category. If I had to loose, Im happy that I lost with the film “Stop”. I really enjoyed watching it. Congratulations, Eoin. And of course everyone else that won or was nominated!

p.s. sorry for my english

This is the what people responded to my post at blendernation. I`ve copied this here, because I think that this discussion is important to make Suzanne Awards even better next year.

As one of the three guys involved I feel I should respond to this.
Yeah, the version we sent to the awards was not totally complete, but it didn’t lack anything critical (yeah, music makes a huge difference, but it was still quite enjoyable without it). It’s not like we sent an animation that ended abruptly story-wise. We can call that copy “a festival version”.
Since we spent most of the summer working on the thing (as an internship at our school) we wanted (and still want) to get as much feedback as possible. Hence the decision to send a version without music to Suzanne. A year from now the animation probly feels tad old and getting criticism of the things that don’t work in it wouldn’t be as effective as now that we haven’t yet moved on to next projects…
So, I’m glad our animation was selected for the Awards in it’s unpolished form and received some interest and giggles (judging from the unofficial video posted here somewhere).
    thanks,
    j

It would look even better than now (and as I said I enjoyed watching it already). So a tip for next time: don`t hurry. Finish your film, add music, cut some scenes that are too long, postprocess the video and boom, your film is 2 times better.

And also consider this situation: imagine that you watch the Oscars Ceremony and nominated Shrek 3 isnt a finished movie. What would you think then? That would be strange, dont you think?
I know that Suzanne Awards is still very young festival and thats why there are few things that could be better. To the "…Dead Pixels" team: congratulations to you again. I really wish you all the best and hope I could watch some new movies from you soon. The reason why Im writing all this: I think that all the competitors and the Suzanne Awards Festival would look 100% PRO if the movies in the Best Short Film category would all be finished movies.
P.s. Sorry for my English, but I think you understand what I mean. Cheers

Btw, one of my favourites of the festival was Blood. Didn’t win though, but very cool.

I mean these two things are different in many ways, but have something in common. It`s all about the films. I don`t say that Suzanne Awards will be some day as important as Oscars (of course, never will), but if you want to learn, than do it from the best. And there`s still many things that can be done better. Jury for example: Suzanne Awards don`t have one. People vote for the best film. Why is that? I think that there should be a jury. Of course there could be a special prize by the people`s votes, but the winners in main categories should be chosen by jury, if you ask me.

I think the main thing is: is the Suzanne Awards Festival just for fun or do we want to promote people who make good films, encourage others to work and learn more, etc. What I mean is the more better the films, the tougher competition, the more interesting festival, the better promotion of Blender - and when Blender gets even more popular, more people use them, more films will be made leading to more submitions to the festival and so on. Full circle.
And about the Oscars again - its hard to compare it with Suzanne Awards, sure. But how old are the Oscars and how old is the Suzanne Awards Festival? First Oscars ceremonies were completly different than the nowodays ceremonies. I think that the Suzanne Awards, being so young festival is doing really well and is on the right track. But why to learn on our own mistakes and wait for 70 years until theres everything perfect? We should learn from the best. The Oscars are hell good example, but of course not only the Oscars. There are many festivals much closer to the Suzanne Awards formula. OK, that`s all folks  I hope you all know that I write all this to provoke a discussion and try to make Suzanne Awards even better.
Oh yeah, and about the “Blood” film - I also enjoyed watching this one. In fact, that was my personal favorite.

really exciting works in here, keep it up !
Mallow : by the way “Apocalypse Now” won the golden palm in Cannes festival with an unfinished version !

OK, but what about few other things? One thing for example: why one film can be nominated in only one category? This years "Blood" was in my opinion really good designed film and why not to let it compete also in this category? I now that you will probably respond to this, that you want to promote this way as many people as you can, but it is not that simple. It is very common situation that films are made by several people. And if the film is nominated in the Best Short Film category you automaticly reject it from other categories, meaning that person who did only the animation in film cant compete. It is unfair. Categories are good, but the rule that the film can be nominated in only one category is bad.
And for those who may think that I write this for my own intentions (that for example my own film could be nominated in few categories) - there is also another thing I think should be changed. Why winners from previous years are excluded from the competition? I really dont understand this one. Ive been nominated only so I can submit next year, but please let me compete with this years winners. I really enjoyed the "...dead pixels" film (not as much as "blood", though), even if it wasnt finished, but thats another story. The authors have potential and their next film could be so much better. And by the Suzanne Festival rules they just cant submit it. I think that this is most important change that needs to be done. Let previous yearswinners submit their new films. People learn and their next film is very very often much better. Why dont we want better films in the competition? Better films = better rank of the festival. What do you think about that?

p.s. sorry for 3 posts one after another, but I thought that with all these quotes it would get messed up another way.

Well…

There is one major issue that you should not overlook. Or maybe there’s two things you need to be aware of.

  1. The Suzanne Awards are there to entertain the people at the conference (thus showing the same movie twice isn’t a lot of fun, we want to see as many different things as we can).

  2. The Suzanne Awards are there to encourage new users (thus not to award the same really good people every year).

Now the community really is growing and more and more works are being made by multiple users. Also we may want to add a few categories. The main aspect to remember though is… even though we’d love to do a “Best still image” category… it’s rather boring as part of the festival. That’s why we concentrate on animations so far. Also, we’d love a “best game” category, but there’s really not enough good games being made to warrant it.

In short… a lot can be done, but the awards depend largely on what is made by the community… if the community changes… so will the awards.

There is no need to show one film a couple of times. I think that some info before each film about categories in which this film was nominated will do.
And even better solution, in my opinion - you present couple of films and people can vote freely and vote for a film in any category. People could select one film in as many categories as they want.

  1. The Suzanne Awards are there to encourage new users (thus not to award the same really good people every year).

OK, but films are often made by a group of people. If such group wins, all of them cant submit their films next year? Or only directors? For example an animator of winning film makes next year his own film and he is automaticaly excluded from the competition? I think that you may consider new categorie: best debut. But I really think that at least main category: the Best Short Film should be open for everyone. You wrote yourself that "The Suzanne Awards are there to entertain the people". So I think that festival attendents would prefer to watch best films made this year with blender, not best of those which didnt win anything yet.

It would be great if more people would share their opinions here. Please join the discussion
