The Adventure of Sailey McSailsington.

Since my last project was largely inspired by existing works, I wanted to base the next one on my own concept and design. Something that Ive never really been able to do so far. So here goes…

Concept (i cant really draw all that well). The idea is a sailor in a boat crashing through text in a book or the grooves in a record (might try that next), and forming the boat’s wake and sea spray out of letters or music notes. After thinking about the idea for a while, the idea expanded to making one of the pages be a wave thats about to engulf the character, who we should call Sailey McSailsington.

It’s an interesting challenge because it requires several skills that are lacking for me (i.e sculpting, possible rigging, particles for the wake / sea spray, and clothes modelling)

I played around with compositon and im 90% happy with it. Once I have a more solid idea of the lighting I’ll lock the comp down.

Composition test using some CMV set ups:

Tried sculpting for Sailey McSailsington’s head. (Natholas basemesh from Blendswap)

The original plan was to put as much detail in it as possible so it could be rendered from multiple angles, But that might be too ambitious for me right now.

Thoughts and ideas always welcome.

Decided that it would be more interesting to change the environment to a beach. Lighting is still not right. Im imagining a darker evening scene lit by moonlight.

A lot more to do. But on my immediate list is:

  • Fix lighting
  • fix Sailey’s pose
  • Texture boat (i may need to remodel as its just a quick single mesh)
  • Add some detail to Sailey’s skin and give him a beard to end all beards. (also re-think his clothes)
  • Create and render the scene in the book.
  • Remodel the main page as it looks stiff and not at all like its crashing down like a giant wave.
  • Dress scene with sea weed, shelfish, and more starfish etc
  • Find out how to add sea foam for waves etc, as the ocean looks dull and you can see the seam between the foreground plane and the bg plane.
  • think about adding a large pirate ship somewhere.

There’s more but i cant think of it right now.

As always, feel free to throw your two cents in.
