The asset browser is still not ready to replace the Pose Library

Hum ! Good one !

It’s probably planned at some point, since it’s a tool used by blender animation studio and given how they work I’m pretty sure they’ll come up with something great to use.
Having a way to select like hand poses, face poses is so crucial and done so many times during the day I can’t see that they won’t address that at some point. That seems a perfect fit for catalogs and tag.

Maybe they switched from one system to the other a bit early in the process, while the old system wasn’t really good at least it worked and people find their way into it.
Now it’s a complete reboot, with a lot of needed addition to have something that works equally good in every areas.
Hence the topic, the problem might not be that the new system isn’t better than the old one, at least conceptually, but more that it still need a bit of polish to fully replace the old one…

I see this discussion open and I don’t see why I should open another one.

Now. It’s the first time I use the pose library. Blender 3.6 is what I use.

Let me understand clear: basically there are 3 places where you operate the poses.

Action editor is the most convenient place where you have buttons to create and rename poses.

Asset browser lets you categorize poses into folder with subfolders.

The animation N-panel lets you have quick access to the various poses.

The issue I have is that I find annoying the fact that in the N-panel location all the poses are arranged alphabetically, and I have no possibility to restrict the range of research. In the asset browser at least I can double click and assign a pose. And I have also the possibility to create 1 root folder and various subfolders.

In the N-panel section I found no way to categorize.

There’s a section in the asset browser with tags, and I noticed if I assign the same tag to some poses they become searchable by that name.

But the tag does not work in the N-panel view. So how do I use that N-panel addon? It’s pointless since it’s a sparse collection of poses and I cannot categorize them.

We were discussing Asset Browser in the Links and Overrides thread: https://blenderartists.org/t/links-library-overrides-are-still-glitchy-after-4-years-of-development

I had similar problems with the Asset Browser, so I fell back to using the File | Link/Append menu command, because it’s easier to find what you are looking for - and the end result is the same anyway. Only real disadvantage is Link/Append doesn’t show you what items are flagged as Assets (Make Asset) which would be useful.

With the asset browser, even when you remember the name of your asset, it’s hard to find because AFAICT it doesn’t do keyword searching, so your substring has to match exactly. Makes it very hard to find stuff.

Actions not being specifically tied to a particular rig is occasionally useful - because it lets you transfer animation to similar rigs, but honestly, that’s not something you do often.

And that small benefit is outweighed by the negative that when you’re doing a scene with more than one character (even in the same blend file!) it’s very easy to lose track of which Actions can be applied to which rig. It gets even worse when you are in the Asset Browser and you see every Action in your library.

Now add the fact that you need separate Actions for the rig and correctively shape-key deformed meshes, and it gets very hard to keep track of.

I try and mitigate this by adding keywords to asset names (e.g. POSE FOR xyz - abc SHAPEKEY FOR pqr), but that’s hard to work because of the weak searching, and because Blender limits names to 64 characters, and can change them without your realizing, makes it very hard to keep track of. The 64 character limit generally makes it hard to maintain large libraries, especially since Blender has a flat naming system.

Also I found while I can drag single frame poses to a rig from Asset Browser, it doesn’t work for multi-frame Action - like a blink, so I have to use the NLA anyway.

Also, the changes introduced by Asset Browser broke the very useful: https://github.com/scaredyfish/blender-rhubarb-lipsync I’m not sure if it’s been fixed yet, but it was out of commission for some time and that inconvenienced many people.

Suggestions:

  • Let asset map do keyword instead of exact substring searching of names and tags. Tag search doesn’t work for me.
  • Provide a way to filter poses by intended rig/mesh - which would also help the shapekey problem.
  • Let you drag multi-frame poses to assets instead of just single frame.
  • Remove the 64 character limit for names. (A big change, but overdue).
  • Do note as of 3.6 you can see the full name in mouseover. Showing the sourcefilename underneath would be even more helpful, since N-panel is usually closed due to lack of screen real-estate.
  • Let us take a screenshot of the asset when we make it. The background-thread-renderer-thing often doesn’t make legible thumbnails. Negates the usefulness of thumbnails.
  • Currently when assets are dragged into the viewport, it puts them at very strange locations. Not z=0, but some random number above or below. I found I always had to move them. File Link/Access using the 3D cursor is easier.

Thanks alot for your reply, you solved 99% of my issues, plus you gave me a lip sync solution for something I was coincidentally doing right now.

This is what I do. In the asset browser I create a folder with subfolders, which allows for category filters. I can double click on a pose and appy it from here, the asset browser.

But, the inconvenience is that I have to select the bones that have been keyed to create the pose. Instead in the pose library addon I can drag the pose and have it applied even if I am not selecting the bones. In any case, thanks.

You’re welcome. Rhubarb is really nice, but I’m not sure it’s working because of the Asset Browser changes. I’ll be needing it shortly and will see if I can get it working if it’s not.

yes doesnt work. I hope I can get online v1 of the asset library ddon to test this other addon you gave me link to

It works if you use older versions of blender that still have the old pose lib. The poses in the asset lib can be assigned to the asset lib legacy addon and then you create an action, import.

This test I did sucks quite alot, but thats my first time. Just wanted to test the tool you advised. And many thanks, this stuff can work.

Hello @AndromaxPro !
Did you check how it’s supposed to be used ? https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/animation/armatures/posing/editing/pose_library.html
look like ctrl-f in the N panel allows to search, and there are probably other useful hidden options there, like the flip pose or blend.

Have fun !

No. There are no categories, no filters, only a sparse collection of poses ordered alphabetically (unusable if your poses are many). Search by tag does not work. I tried already tagging, it does not works.

The categories are only here, in the asset browser. This is the only place where you can actually collect poses, not in the pose lib addon that by the way I disabled being useless.

Well, ok thank you !
I tried it myself and indeed it’s weird that the N-panel doesn’t allows at least to switch catalogs.
Looks like it’s not super useful indeed.
Which surprises me since it’s been developed at blender studio and animators there helped a lot in the design.

Maybe it’s meant to be used like this : https://stuvel.eu/files/prezzo-poselib-demo/#/12
Which relies on a good naming scheme, but anyway, when using multiple character it can becomes messy.

It looks like using the asset browser is more useful and the N panel is a bit too simplistic, it doesn’t seems to be a lot to fix it, mainly, access to catalogs and including tags in the search.

Filter by name is at bottom of list, hidden behind horizontal, not expanded, triangle arrow.
Ctrl F with mouse hovering list of poses, in sidebar, should open it.

It does not support tag and sorting options are limited to invert alphabetical order.
Pose Library add-on does support catalogs, too.
It was the first attempt to replace old pose library.

And then, development focused on workflow from asset browser.

Now, they are working on Asset Shelf, that should replace the add-on providing pose library in sidebar.
Asset Shelf will support catalogs.
It is available as experimental feature in 4.0 alpha.

You’re welcome. I used Rhubarb for a pilot when 2.8 came out and it was a real timesaver. If you create text files to go alongside the sound files, it’ll give even better results.

Hope they fix the shortcomings cataloged here, but do you know how radical a change those changes are? Was about to fix Rhubarb-for-Blender. Would hate to see that fix break with 4.0.

From my understanding it’s just a new interface for assets : https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/issues/102879
The core of assets / poselibs isn’t changing so you should be fine fixing rubarb import code.
