The big SDF thread

 I’m eagerly awaiting the profile spline. It turns out to be one of the hardest shapes to get right in SDF (without artifacts and with proper blending to all kinds of shapes).

Sascha, the dev, has rewritten the SDF Modeler engine a while ago, but he’s very occupied by work and family, so I’m glad he found some time to work on the instancing.

A new SDF add-on for Blender has appeared:

It probably works in Blender for Windows, and maybe Linux as well. Tried it in Blender for macOS, but only the Empty placeholders are visible.

I’ve tried Fix Viewport Preview, installed Scikit Image, but no result. And when I try to install pyOpenVDB, it returns an error.

I wonder if the dev is using the latest API with Vulkan, or OpenGL.

This is a very annoying issue to solve for me too. The fact that I dont own a Mac makes it impossible to test the addons I write on it. People come to me to complain about the fact that its broken or doesn’t even install properly and I literally can’t do anything to fix the issue.

That sucks indeed. Aren’t there online virtual macOS test environments?

Nice new SDF filters coming up in Blender, similar to Cinema 4D’s SDF filters.

Next step: a native ray-marching renderer for Blender?

I wonder if it isnt possible to extend cycles raycasting code. I would guess they have a modular design to support different space partitioning structures, one more specialized raycast function that treats an sdf like any other bvh or octree shoudn’t be too hard right?

Hey everyone, I would like to share some of my progress with my Rogue SDF Add-On.

I achieved some pretty good fundamental steps with it, I fixed some memory management obstacles, when exporting, Blender won’t crash anymore, it divides the grid to smaller chunks for exporting, this will help Blender to use less memory and avoid crashing.

I managed to make a new way for exporting, this method is much faster and smarter, it starts a low gird then adds a smart grid on top of it for more complex parts, I’m really happy with this one, I can export high resolution models now much much faster than before.
I managed to export 6 million mesh less than ten minutes and 3 million models less than five minutes almost clean, it allows Rogue SDF to export much denser models, make more detailed models.

Next challenge is making Rogue SDF to have much more SDF Shapes with Texture Buffer technique, once done I will update the add-on hopefully soon. Here some of my progress modeling with a level from stray with it and new mesh export test:

Did you try this new Blender SDF add-on yet?

It would be fantastic if Cycles could handle SDFs without the need for meshing. We’d need a native SDF modeling toolkit as well then. Geo Nodes SDF is currently predominantly useful for effects (motion graphics, particles and such), not modeling. For modeling we need interactive SDF primitives with gizmos, easy Boolean and Blend controls, et cetera.

Yes I tried it, it didn’t work for me for exporting, I had to install some libraries first, one of them didn’t work, also it has some fundamental performance problems reminded me of my early days of making my add-on, it’s very basic right now.

Added to the initial post.

I guess it’s the only way to make Add-Ons for Mac and Linux from Windows! and I think installing these virtual environments will take a lot of space too, I might try it but not now.

“To create a virtual environment for bug fixing your Blender add-on across macOS and Linux while using Windows, consider using a virtual machine software like VMware or VirtualBox. This allows you to run macOS or Linux as a guest operating system on your Windows host, enabling you to test and debug your add-on in those environments.”

@JohnKaz Has posted an update about ConjureSDF progress.

Added Code golfing a tiny demo using maths and a pinch of insanity to the OP. Not entirely SDF, but enough related to post here. :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s a blog post about the new Volume and SDF nodes: https://code.blender.org/2025/10/volume-grids-in-geometry-nodes/

I made SDF with sharp angles.
First picture is Naive Surface Nets and second picture is sharp algolythm.

Also, I don’t use QEF and Dual Contouring and Neural SDF
I hope it helps in some way.

Thanks, looks intriguing. Do you have a link to more info?

Hey Jeacom, I’m the Dev for Arcane SDF, yeah it sucks. I would love to make it work with MacOS, but yeah, i don’t have a Mac. and my normal method of Developing is write some code, test in blender, fix broken stuff, test in blender, fix more broken stuff, test in blender, lol. So, it’s not like i can just implement the code and pass it to someone else for testing, that would be a nightmare. I’m working on two standalone SDF apps, but alas, they are also targeted at windows.

Hey, I’ve been meaning to give your addon a try, it looks pretty impressive. Tbh, had i known yours existed i probably wouldn’t have made ArcaneSDF. I created it because i really wanted to play with ConjureSDF, but just can’t afford it right now. About my addon, yeah, i agree, it’s pretty early, i started it back in July or August i think, but hasn’t been worked on consistently. I put enough work in to get it barely working, then released an Alpha, just to kinda gauge people’s interest and see if it’s worth pursuing further. Again, like i said, at the time i didn’t know about your addon or all the other sweet standalone apps available. The libraries i used were mainly for export because while my custom marching cubes, extended marching cubes, and dual contouring meshing functions DID export meshes, there were flaws that i wasn’t able to overcome and didnt want to waste the time if there wasnt going to be any interest. Figured I’d come back later and fix them and ditch the dependencies. Anyway, i’d love to chat in DM if you’re down for it, you use discord?
