Started an alien/high tech power core this morning. Modelled in Wings, (I really love the Bevel feature - note to the coders ), and imported to blender. I will likely do the rest of the modelling in Blender.
Cool looking thingy… And it’s not only the beveling that’s so great - this is a good example of ‘extrude along normal’ too. Very helpful stuff.
It looks like you didn’t use enough segments on the bottom cylinder though. Luckily that’s sooo easy to fix in Wings too…
hmmm, bevels arent very consistent, like the tihngy in the middle needs to have a similar bevel to the other parts.
depends on what size it is.
if its something you hold in your hand, then the big bevel on the outside is about right, but if its a huge big arse building thingaling then theres no way there would be a 3 meter radius round bevel on the edges ;), it would be more like what its like around the ball thingy.
well, I want to ask you BgDM, how do you make edges smooth like this. I have tried my best to subdiv. in wings3d and similar work and endless attempts but still cant achieve this result. Actually I have been doing this and trying even before I saw your post.
Hmm… I hadn’t thought of that. I actually like it the way it is. Thanks anyway. And yeah, the extrude along normal is really nice and a hell of a lot easier to do than in Blender too.
basse: I think you may be right now that I look at it on my home comp. I did this on my laptop and the edges seemed to look OK on it. I may have to fix that a bit.
Evry: In Wings, just select all the faces with CTRL+A and then right click your mouse and select Bevel. Then just slide your mouse a bit or enter a numeric value. That’s all there is too it.
GFX Idiot: I can post a screen capture tomorrow for you on the light set up. It’s not that special. Just a fake GI dome for the lighting from the top, a group of spots set to layer only coming from the bottom to light the post. A set of blue and red spots, layer only again, to have the light coming from under the sphere portion.
Thank you very much.
I have tried that before but I think I got it the wrong way. Only now after I read your post and went to work it in wings3d I can see the result.
At least now I can achieve something that I have been trying for long time. I really regret not asking before this, I would saved myself a lot of efforts.
By the way, I like your works in blender, especially modeling, they are just piece of arts, making blender attractive and give me the well to keep trying and not to give up.
This is not a complement, in fact I like the work of others but I feel more attracted to your models.
thanx again.
Cool!
I’m gonna try wings again, I mustn’t have given it enough time last I tried it.
I’d remove that sphere on top and let it project some sort of holographic status diagram there instead. Just a thought…
ztonzy: hehe. when it’s slow, there is always time to model. Thanks too.!!
rndedbrian: Thanks!
pofo: I just started with wings last week. It is definitely different, but there are some features that are very, very nice. I have something planned for the sphere, so don’t worry.
Well, I would like to add my voice. I do agree with the idea of animation, and more featured models would be nice to be included. Hay, I like your Bug Bot somewhere in this forum. Keep the good work, and all the best.
