The Dark Potato

I am a Blender n00b, unquestionably. This isn’t the first thing I have made in Blender…but compared to some of the stuff I see on here, it’s probably not gonna make any waves.

The idea is this sort of “Veggie Tales” meets “Sin City”. The Dark Potato (aka “Frank Russett”) is this spud who didn’t get dug up at harvest time and was left in the ground to rot. He was “resurrected” by a chemical spill and has decided that he has had enough to do with the whole “conventional produce” thing and has gone into business as a private investigator. He began life as a box in Blender. There was some small amount of tweaking done in Wings. Texture done in Gimp.

Hey, very funny design!
Good image for a start, and nice textures.
I don’t know how, but the sewed mouth could have been more visible. It’s a bit dark around there.

Be well

PS : Are you new to Blender or totally new to 3D and CG?

hehehe i like it,but i would model the mouth and stitches, is he going to have arms and legs? if so you should render him blowing the head of a brussel sprout or something

Not totally new. I started out using Blender to do stuff for the game BZFlag, but got tired of having to constantly go in and flip the normals on the faces of my models to make them work in the game, plus I couldn’t quite get the hang of materials in Blender. So I switched to Wings3D for my BZFlag modelling. But I really wanted to get into animation, plus things like particles, etc., so Blender has always been in the back of my mind.

The first Dark Potato was done totally in Gimp as a sort of tongue in cheeck poke at the current “sig craze”.

Later I did another, larger, all Gimp piece and that started me thinking about modeling and perhaps animating the potato…

Here is a screenie of the last BZFlag map I did, done in wings:

This is my first BZFlag effort, “DarkWorld”, done in Blender. You can’t see it, but one of the models has a missing face or two because of the issue with the flipped normals that Blender kept generating.

I thought about modelling the mouth. But the question arose as to why a potato would have a “stitched” mouth? On the other hand, potatos to get assorted cuts and whatnot, so I decided to go that route and just bump map the mouth. Perhaps I need to make it larger.

I am still not sure about arms, legs, etc. I have toyed with the idea of having “sprouts” for those. Or just having objects just sort of “float” in proximity to him. Might give him some shoes. I have a fedora hat in the works and I am thinking about a sort of shoulder rig gun harness for him.

I like the potatoe and I think the story and concept are great. It would be interesting to see how far you go with this.

Good work.

Added a hat:
