The Dark Tower

Here’s something I’ve been tinkering with lately. it’s the Dark Tower from the Stephen King Dark Tower series. stil needs work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I never read a book, but saw only two of the movies based by them. You need leafless trees on a full moon or crescent moon night back drop. It needs to be scary.

you might be thinking of something else. there’s never been a movie based on the Dark Tower series. There’ve been movies based on books that touch on the tower such as the Stand, Salems Lot, and Hearts in Atlantis. Ron Howard is working on bringing the 7 book series to both the big screen and television though.

The scene i’m working on here is of Roland the Gunslinger’s final arrival at the Dark Tower. I’ll be adding him into the next render. As it’s described in the book the Tower sits in the middle of a field of roses and purple grass at the center of four roads that follow the paths of the beams that hold the Tower up. The clouds also follow in those directions aswell always seeming to flow to and from the Tower which is the nexus of all existence.

I was referring 2 two other movies, Pet Cemetery and The Mist.

ah got ya. Pet Cemetery has no reference to the Dark Tower that i know of. though it’s a great movie. The Mist definitely does. Obviously with the movie poster painting in the beginning with Roland, the Door, the Tower and the Rose and the fact that a doorway to another dimension was opened. They never say, but the creatures probably come from Discordia in End World of Roland’s land. or from Todash space which is discribed as the space between dimensions divoid of light and filled with ungodly creatures.

here’s a couple more renders. with Roland in the pic. one with higher blur effect than the other. I still need work on depth of field, lighting and may add the step pyramid nearby along with possibly the Crimson King on the Balcony.

Okay. I just pictured this scene in my head again. A night setting would be better, but a dusk backdrop would complement it.

Can I suggest moving the horizon line up? If not what XeroShadow said… (since book didn’t describe the sky?)

Just getting back to work on this. been busy with life stuff aswell as the BG video game competition. Here’s a few pics i’ve been tinkering with to give me an idea of the different skylines.

this one with sort of an Arizona sunset look

Another Angle with Roland added. DoF focused on the tower

Yeah, I think that’s a good idea. I’ve tinkered with changing the angle of the camera aswell and not revealing the whole tower since really it’s enourmous compared to Roland. I’m thinking of doing a few different shots besides this one. Atleast one action shot of Roland shooting sneetches out of the sky as the Crimson King tosses em.

This with focus changed to Roland. I think I’m more partial to this focus.

The final so far in a 4:3 aspect ratio to give it the Sergio Leoni “Man with No Name” look.

I’m also going to be working on adding mist to the background as in the Blendercookie mist tutorial. Thank God for BlenderCookie, BlenderGuru and all the other great tutorial makers out there.

Been a while since i had a chance to work on this (life has a way of doin that) so here’s a few updates. made some changes to the towers size and distance. it stands around 1000 ft high and is not about 1 mile away from the Roland Character.

again taking me way too long to get back to work on this, but anyway here’s where it’s at. nearly done me thinks.
