the dragon hunter

hi guys,

i am looking for some constructive criticism of my latest character portrait.

it was realized completely in blender and rendered with cycles. the textures are painted by hand or are made from photographs i took myself.

i did use some post-processing nodes to add lens distortion and film grain effects.

the background is also painted by hand in gimp.

how is the lighting? is it took dark?

how do you find the skin texture? is it too smooth?

what about the tusks?

are the hair particles looking good?

thanks

too smooth…

For an orc, yeah. Too smooth. Those guys have heaps of wrinkles, presumably. The modelling IMO is really good. Especially the tusks. The eyes are also pretty sexy.

The ears really lack details and don’t look very good. The pose is very uninspired. Textures lack wrinkles and color variations. Lighting is quite flat. The pony tail does not look very realistic.

It’s a pretty good model. To improve the image, you could start by moving the main light a little more to the side to give more shadows and depth to your lighting. The other thing is that the shoulder straps draw our eyes away from his face, I’d darken them and give them a bit more grunge. I agree with the others about adding a bit more wrinkles (and grunge). The other thing you might do is put the camera lower or tilt his head back a bit, then get him to stare down at the viewer to make him more imposing.

Just playing around,

When I think of Orcs, I think of Neanderthals (or Cromagnon) – which is generally characterized by a very heavyset brow and thick jawline. The jawline looks good, but I think making the brow a bit more protruding and heavyset, it’ll give you a more… “raw?” look to the Orc. Oh, and as other have said, wrinkles! Or scars! Add a lot of wrinkles and scars to give it more of a warrior look. This guy looks like he’s fresh out of boot camp with no battlefield experience.

Otherwise, very well done.
