The Flower

The concept is pretty simple - a flower, or plant of some kind, will be growing out of the shell on the left. I’m not sure at this stage what that will look like but here’s the scene so far. I’m planning on having some extra details, like vines, growing up the sides of the shell maybe…

This is straight out of Blender, no post processing etc.

I used the cloth simulator to drop the cloth over the other part of the shell on the right hand side, and used some DOF to focus the attention onto the main piece.

All models were created in Blender, and as this is only my fourth project in Blender, I’m still learning the tools. Textures, so far anyway, are from CGTextures.

This is beautiful. The modeling and the textures are really nice.

The material of the rubber o-rings could use some work, though. At the moment these are too black. And I feel all the black areas are a bit too dark and could benefit from some more visible details.

I’ll follow your thread to see how this evolves.

Wow, thanks minoribus! Appreciate the feedback.
I’ve been feeling the same with those orings and the fairly heavy contrast just adds to the orings dark look - I’ll be tweaking those and I’ll post back with an update soon…

Made some tweaks to various materials, and very minor tweaks to the lighting/environment. I neglected to mention that I’m rendering with the FILM preset and also one of the photography presets, hence why the darks were quite strong. Anyways, next step is the main piece…

Added some rocks… and a vignette for effect…

It looks really good. A very plausible scene with nice texturing, balanced lighting, and realistic disorderly placement.

Given the somewhat mechanical, militaristic theme, I wonder if perhaps a simple little flower growing out of the pot would work well here? Just for the organic contrast and war/peace symbolism.

Thanks rjshae
Spot on about the flower! My original sketch has exactly that and that’s always been my intention. I’ve been playing around with the idea of going a little bit more out there, so to speak. For example, instead of a flower (which would make perfect sense given the context so I’m not ruling that out) I was also thinking about a mechanical flower. So, if metal could “grow” organically and also be functional, than that’s what it would be… I’d use small bolts and metallic tendons to hold the “leaf” together, and so on. But, I’m not sure that would be too much metal and detract from the clear contrast between a device and a flower…

How do others feel about that?

Thanks again for the kind words, that’s made my day!

Hi all, I’ve now added the plant, deciding to go with the tradtional organic type. There are still a few things I’m thinking of adding, which will kinda set off the whole scene nicely, so watch this space for more soon.

Coming along. This could be real nice! Maybe have the blossoms open?

Did you “paint” the textures in photoshop, or did you use another technique?

Thanks NID - here’s another update…

Beautiful! This is looking great so far.

my only critique is that the whites of the flowers look really blown out, especially the two right-most ones. I think we should be able to see some of the shading and texture in all the flowers, instead of a single solid color

other than that, this is a really great image

Thanks!

Yep I noticed that too - for now I left it as is due to the film simulation I’m rendering with, which looks like it’s pulling the highlights out a little too much. I’ll fix it in the next update

Another update, with the following changes:

  1. Added a bottle in the mid to background (right hand side)
  2. Removed one of the rivets on the shell and plugged the hole with some rubber, to prevent leaks
  3. Added a “feeder” bottle in the foreground, with a hose to the shell (not completely sold on the hose material though)
  4. Minor tweak to the vignette
  5. Those bright flowers - not so bright now
  6. And tweaked the flower colours

This really caught my eye. I was looking through all the thumbnails in this thread and while a lot of them looked good (cars, characters, etc…) yours really stuck out. I commend you for it. I’m really interested/inspired by this scene. Even though this scene doesn’t look particularly real it has a lot of detail and great placement of your objects. I’m really curious what this bomb is about.

I feel that the flower you added is too much and draws way too much attention from the scene.I liked it without the flower maybe with the rocks. But if you went with a plant like from the Disney movie Wall-e I think it would look great! Simple plant would balance your render better. Don’t let my comments discourage you-you inspired me!!

Thanks whysofrail! I’m glad you like it. You make a very good point about the flower - my original sketch had just the one flower, pretty much like the one you referenced. I guess I got carried away a little

I’m just rendering out the final version (for now) as I want to move onto something else. Knowing me, I’ll probably get back on this and replace the flowers etc

Thanks again for the kind words, really appreciate it!
