The Frog Wants the Cake

All done in Blender, with a bit of hand-painting and procedural textures. I haven’t learned how to rig yet, so maybe down the line we’ll get an animation of the frog stealing the cherries!

It took me a while, but I finally tested some filters in Blender’s compositor. I loved this paint filter, it added a super cute touch to the final result!

How I worked with the filter

I tested others, but I really liked the watercolor option.

I worked initially with the Size, that was where I saw it makes the biggest difference in the connection between the lit parts and also respecting the shadows. I believe shadows are extremely important, just like light, especially to better understand our three-dimensionality. Because of this, I kept focusing on how the shadows would be respected in the filter. It was my choice to understand what I wanted with the filter.

For Simplification I chose 1.9 and continued on the same point, shadows. I was looking at a good mix with a blur in the art, but I preferred to keep the contours of the art more defined. Even though it looked interesting with more of a “blur”, I thought it looked a lot like a watercolor painting. But at the moment I was wanting another aesthetic.

I didn’t have much interest in Accidental Colors for this case, but I liked some details, mainly in the background. But since I wanted a more neutral background and the actual effect it gave to the volumetrics I placed in the background, I thought it already gave too many textures to a background that already had the presence of fireflies.

In Pooling I felt a better contour on the edges, I felt more difference again in the contour of the effects in the background. I also liked how it gave an effect of greater contrast in the shadows, but I didn’t like how it modified the background texture too much. So I chose to leave it more timid.

In Sharpness I worked with it with more hesitation. But looking at my art today, I would take more risks in this process. I looked a lot at how my small details were very difficult to understand. Maybe an art that doesn’t have a scale that is further away would look cool between 0.6 or 0.7. I liked the effect at this strength. But I still want to test it on another art.

Well done, i like the hand painted textures and the render.

The animations could be fun, maybe something like this?
