📣 The future of the Game Engine category

The Blender game engine is neither supported nor maintained. It was discontinued by the Foundation nearly a decade ago. In that time, the game engine section of this website has continually declined in engagement, content, and activity.

The game engine is no longer relevant to this site, and we are using large amounts of storage space to host the files from that section of the forum. As a particularly video-heavy section, the Game Engine category is using a disproportionate amount of resources for the amount of activity.

For these reasons, the game engine section of this site will become read only on September 1st.

If there is content stored in old threads, you will still be able to access that content after September 1st. However, you will no longer be able to create new content or topics.

At some point, at least a year from now, this section will be removed from visibility and will no longer be accessible. Please archive any important content from that section as soon as reasonably possible. We will make another announcement with plenty of lead time when we have decided to remove the section from the site.

Once the section has been removed, there is no guarantee that content will still be available. Again, we encourage you to download or otherwise archive any important content now rather than waiting.

Community leaders for the various game engine offshoots are encouraged to start their own forums.

Of course understandable to make it read only for the reasons.

But removing it completely will be an unspeakable huge loss. There is so much knowledge and treasure of decades still valuable for users of old and newer derived versions.

(I always used this space as a more reliable place than discord ironically)

Full removal will be delayed as long as is needed for content to be archived or migrated to appropriate forums. Currently the timeline is at least September 2028, no sooner. If that’s not enough time, let us know and we will reassess. We are also happy to help UPBGE and Range community leaders with migration to dedicated forums, including but not limited to data exports and help and guidance for setting up dedicated forums.

P.S. I don’t know who the community leaders for UPBGE and Range are, but you don’t need to have a title or any official position- just someone passionate and willing to keep a community site running. If that sounds like you, reach out to the admins and we will migrate as much as we possibly can to a new Discourse forum. As long as you use Discourse, nothing will be lost- it’s painless and seamless to move content from Discourse forum to Discourse forum.

don’t understand why people don’t use external video links to save space. maybe some one could start a new forum like you said for this.

Maybe that could be you? No one has reached out yet

a quick solution may be using one of those free forum builder websites. Don’t know if that would suffice.

here is a sample of what it would look like

I don’t have the time to do it myself, but I’m happy to help any community leaders willing to step up with migration. I will note that it will be easier to migrate from Discourse to Discourse

Just going to jump in here to say that Discourse has a free plan, although I don’t know if it would suffice.

Alternatively, Discourse can be self-hosted on a cloud server.

Is any info available how much space the “Game Engine”-Category is about to take?

That’s a great question. I will run a report and get back to you

Of course, creating an engine is no easy task, but the current situation is largely due to the chaotic approach of the UPBGE development team. They killed off the community by trying to keep pace with Blender 3.x. The right move would have been to focus on UPBGE 0.2.5 and implement improvements. They lost many developers who actually enjoyed using the tool; many migrated to Godot and the like. The UPBGE 3.x project is a pipe dream—integrating it with the current version of Blender would take years. Independent developers are in a hurry, especially in a world where AI is advancing relentlessly. So, I’d like to thank those of you creating UPBGE 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x for spending all this time sweeping sand off the beach.

We understand and respect your final decision. Since the Blender Game Engine (BGE) was officially discontinued many years ago .. Discussions surrounding BGE, UPBGE, and Range have gradually become intertwined, making it increasingly difficult to keep the information organized. :smiling_face_with_tear:

We are currently exploring the possibility of creating our own forum to preserve this historical knowledge and ensure it remains accessible to the community. To help us evaluate the feasibility of this project, we would also appreciate knowing approximately how much storage space would be required to host the archived data ?

Sad day to behold  BGE motivated me to follow through with 3D, and made some great friends in this forum. Hope someone can host a new place for future BGE/UPBGE users

Update yall. I’m thinking of hosting a final BGMC jam - little farewell to the game engine category.

Please let me know if anyone’s interested before I organize an itch.io page <3
https://blenderartists.org/t/farewell-to-the-bge-category-interested-in-one-final-bgmc-jam/

It’s surprisingly difficult to figure out the precise number, but 30-40 GB should cover it

This is very sad to hear, although I appreciate the decision to keep the category available in read-only mode for the time being.

Would there be any possibility of keeping the category active if the community manages to revive it and generate meaningful new activity?

I run what was once the largest YouTube channel dedicated to the Blender Game Engine, although the channel now covers game development more broadly. This is particularly important to me because I believe I could help bring a significant number of developers and former BGE users back to the community.

Thank you for considering it.

We would certainly be open to a discussion. A rallying of the community, especially combined with a fundraising push to more Patreon supporters, would be a new data point that would at least be worth considering a change of plans. We currently lose money every single month this site is up, adding up to thousands. If that could be improved, we wouldn’t need to look at areas like this category that could be reduced to help with that problem

Thanks for looking into that and for the storage estimate!

Good news! We’ll be preserving the data from the category that’s going to be removed.

We’re currently setting up a new forum, although it won’t be hosted on Discourse. Could that complicate the data migration in any way ?

We just need a few more days to finish the setup. After that, we’ll be ready to start the migration with your help.

Our current plan is for the forum to have separate sections for BGE, UPBGE, and Range Engine. Everyone will be welcome, regardless of which engine they use. The only thing we’re still considering is whether hosting it under the rangeengine domain is the best choice, since we want the forum to feel like a community space for all three projects rather than being centered solely around Range Engine.

We’ve also moved to our new domain: https://rangeengine.org.

Most importantly, we don’t want to lose the history of the Blender Game Engine community. Our goal is to preserve as much of it as possible ..

Thanks again for your help — we really appreciate it!

Awesome! If it takes longer than anticipated, no worries. We will be as flexible as needed here
