The Graph Editor is way too complex!

Why is the default graph editor still way to complex. Are there no animators by the blender developmant team.
improvement blender 4.2 LTS !

From what I’ve often seen, people having difficulties with the graph editor haven’t learned how it works, how to use filters, etc. This may or may not apply to you, so it would help answer your question if you expand on this a bit more.

There are a lot of animations produced by the Blender team:

as well as others:

When you open the graph editor you first have to set a lot of settings otherwise you see all the keyframes thats complex.
Why is this not already set for animators by default.

Do it then save as default .blend file

That is not the question ofcourse i save it as default blend file. But it is a preference setting.

If you have specific suggestions, go to an animation module meeting and bring them up. If you just want to vent your frustrations, that’s fine, but there’s not much dialogue to be had in that case

Well i have ask this question on every blender conference I guess they still have no time to change this. I am not the only one you can find the graph editor setting you need to do first before animating to make life easier on youtube. It is just a simple question no frustration.

There’s a huge animation overhaul ongoing. Now is the time to add stuff to the todo list. I agree that the workflow needs smoothing, and it’s happening. But honestly, clicking “only show selected” before starting to edit fcurves is not a big deal. I animate every single day and it’s never stopped me

I have seen your animation reel from 2019 nice work . Do you have something more recent. But good work you make.
These settings should be default for the graph editor !!

hey, developer here.
I did a lot of work on the Graph Editor the past year or so. If you have specifics that you want to change, you can either make a proposal on https://blender.community/c/rightclickselect/ or join one of the module meetings, info in the header here: https://blender.chat/channel/animation-module
Do keep in mind though that Blender is for all kinds of animators. Your preference might not be everybody’s preference. So you have to bring good arguments to the table and keep the side effects of your changes in mind.

Have noticed a lot of QOL improvements since 3.x, not even getting into the plans for the stuff you’re working on now. It’s very appreciated!

Maybe we have to buy graphkit from the blendermarket but tell me why.

… because not everything in life is free?

Blender is opensource but I can not program.
So i waited for years, and gave the developers time to improve the graphic editor default settings But I understand the reason why, it is not about the money. Blender is for everyone.

Okay, so nothing there negates : not everything you want is free.

Someone could decide to give you a free car. But if at some point you decide you want it to have the tires replaced, you’ll either need to do it yourself or pay someone else.

You don t understand what open source means its not that is free. The code is free accesable to make it your self.
But i guess i have set the graph editor myself.
I wonder if buying the graphkit from blendermarket would still be an supplement.
Maybe i will try it because i am still strugling with the graph editor.

Well in this “comparison” for animators for 10 minutes, 10 days and 10 yeas the profi is using maya…

…and… using curves… and AFAIK not using any extras to make it easy…

So even if in blender some things are different… blender can not reinvent everthing to be simple if profesional user want every bit of control… and properly you too when you get into it and want to do some “advanced” animations… then they question would be:

Why can’t someone do the special move one want to with this “by far to simple” controls of this silly editor ? Is there an addon to make it more profesional ??

:person_shrugging:

I have regret my question.

Don’t compare blender with maya
So don’t underestimate the blender developers

Why? There are several answers which may help even others… you know that that’s the reason to be in a community ?

[ Also it’s policy on BA to not doing this… even for un-registered users; only to make the account anonymouse, because it breaks the discussion… ]
