The Hair on the Bear is just not There

I am very new at blender (and 3D modeling in general). I was following a blender cookie tutorial on modeling a stuffed bear. I began to branch out on my own and try adding hair to the bear. I’ve tried with both blender render and cycles but the fur keeps coming up “patchy”. I’ve tried using vertex groups and have googled several hair tutorials. I keep getting the same product. I was hoping someone could help me out or at least give me some suggestions as to how to troubleshoot?

The hair that is missing from the pads of the feet and ears is due to a length vertex group. The missing sections are bare regardless of what I try to do.

Please help a fledgling artist! Thanks!

My suggestion is to attach or post a link to your blend file so other people can actually see what you can see.

Could be a weight paint, normal, shading, material or just distribution/density setting problem. Can just guess without the blend file

Well I’m pretty sure it’s not weight paint but the jury is still out on the other 4. Here’s the file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/166639930/teddy_2.blend

Thanks for helping!

Enable the ‘Use Modifier Stack’ option in the particle settings

That check box isn’t there for me

I got it to work by applying the subsurf, but your method would be optimal. Is there some other option that I need to enable?

You need to be using blender 2.68 or later http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Ref/Release_Notes/2.68/Physics

Ahh, that would be the problem. Thanks for all the help!
