This month, we are seeing the return to a world that was home to one of the most epic and well-reviewed trilogies of all time, The Lord of the Rings. Now considering that the prequel is so large that it will take three movies to tell it all, there are probably some scenes that are more anticipated or feared than others, this is especially true when you find out just how high the bar is when you look at the movies that this one will set the stage for.
All I know about the movie is from what I remember from reading the book more than 10 years ago, but I still remember some key moments, though I’m left to wonder though how some scenes will play out.
Will the battle of five armies be anywhere as intense and well directed as the battle scenes in the main trilogy, how will they depict Mirkwood as a place that one enters and never finds his way out, will they make sure to not go overboard on Smaug’s design so as to give an immediate impression that he is actually a Dragon?
Personally, I’m eagerly waiting for the second movie so we can see Smaug himself on the big screen, a character which I personally almost take more of a liking to than Bilbo and was wishing that the different races on Middle Earth had a mentality more sophisticated then “OMG, a Dragon, let’s kill him!”.
In fact the scene will Bilbo ends up killing him, I feel, may be a somewhat hard to watch scene, as I’m not keen on the idea of the majority of fantasies having the ‘kill the Dragon’ mentality whenever one shows up, you really couldn’t try to preserve and make peace even with just one (noting that all of the other Dragons were killed by the time the book starts)!?
So, most anticipated scenes, most potentially nerve-wracking scenes, scenes which you really hope that Peter Jackson doesn’t mess up, what are your thoughts?
I read that PJ wants to keep the Dragon, drogoney, not sci-fi or to modern. I also suggest that movie 2 will have the killing of the Dragon (who is, lets face it, the bad guy), while movie 3 should be the seige of the King under the Mountain. Where Thorin should essentialy become the bad guy, until they all team up against the Goblin bad guys (again).
Neither is it so large; the whole book is less in size than any of the LotR volumes.
IMO, a much better story than LotR. I object to the religious overtones.
Bilbo doesn’t kill Smaug, nor does he help in any way (IIRC).
SPOILER:
a black bird (raven?) tells (forget the character’s name as it’s been a few years since I last read the book) that his chest has a spot not encrusted by diamonds and is vulnerable to an arrow.
@ Writer’s Block
Bard kills Smaug with his last arrow and later becomes king…
Personally, I want to see the Battle of the Five Armies. Of course, I think we are all expecting a liberal dose of MASSIVE (software) simulations, like in LotR. Can’t wait !!!
Actually without Bilbo the birds wouldn’t be aware of the gap in the jewel encrusted vest, so he is vital. Along with that ring. The funny thing is that Sauron doesn’t seem to notice the ring in the book. Where as in LOTR it’s the only thing that matters.
Just spent the last couple months reading the whole book out loud to my kids, twice. It is r e a l l y hard to stay in the right character voice for all 13 dwarves!
Bilbo cheated in the riddle game, however, as Gollum accepted the challenge it wasn’t a cheat.
@3pointEdit - true enough, and if Bilbo wasn’t there then Smaug is unlikely to have been out at that time; nevertheless, I stand by my statement; responsible by proximity isn’t valid imo.
The only reason why there are three movies is that in this way there will be three times as many “Extended Edition DVDs” (with half-again as much movie on each one) as there otherwise could be. All of which I will dutifully buy. (As will everybody else…)
I hear Ya. In the 70’s we had the Hidlebrandt Bors calenders. http://scrapbook.theonering.net/scrapbook/view/1085. I was waiting for Tom Bombadil in the Lord of the rings. He never showed up.
“Far fetched”? good, That’s good right?
