The Lost Realms of Harronak: a 3D FPS PSW MMORPG

Hi,

I want to introduce you all to a 3D First Person Shooter (FPS) styled, Persistent State World (PSW) based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The project is The Lost Realms of Harronak. This is currently an open source effort, though there are plans for generating revenue in the future through means other than direct sale of a client. These plans are of course contingent upon the success of the project.

Before describing the project further, I would like to say that the purpose of this post is to let you know that we are in need of 3D modelers, animators and texture artists. Hopefully, I can interest some of you into joining this effort.

Currently, the project is progressing forward very quickly. We have a good networking component that has support for UDP multiplexing as well as TCP streams when needed. The code common to both client and server (that is, the code that handles game objects and logic) is being developed. The design for this portion has been detailed beforehand. Also, the 3D engine is being done from scratch, using OpenGL. This engine already supports MD3 model loading and rendering, textured terrain and a skydome. Very soon, it will have a lighting component functional. An advanced Artificial Intelligence is being planned, and is currently being documented.

Let me now say that we are also looking for concept artists who are interested in joining.

Specifically in terms of art, the current focus is on getting a cinematic trailer for the game completed. This cinematic will be based on a portion of the storyline. However, the typical art required for an MMORPG is what you can expect to be involved in. This means that character modeling is among the top on the list. Of course, this include both real and fantastical creatures. Also, natural objects such as trees, etc. are also needed. Buildings are also a significant type of art. Miscelleneous props will also be required.

As for time, this is an open source project and that means that time is voluntary. However, some type of contribution should be made. We are currently very active, mostly through conversation on IRC. You can meet us there during weekdays from 5 PM - 11 PM PST and on weekends almost anytime during the day PST. The irc server is irc.freenode.net and the channel is #lostrealms.
