The Megachitus

Hi there! This is a creature that I originally created back in 2022 for Bolt Graphics, and had the opportunity to completely rework last year. It’s been a great exercise for learning and improving workflows for detailed VFX characters.

You can find more of my work here:

Some Stats:
~5-10Mil polygons in final render (adaptive subdivision)
~6Mil hairs (geometry nodes)
62 UDIM tiles, 6 texture sets, 372 total maps (some are empty placeholders)

Tools Breakdown:
Blender: Blockout, Modelling/Retopo, UV, Groom, Shading, Lighting, Animation, Simulation, Rendering
ZBrush: Sculpting
Houdini: Water FX (environment scene)
Mari: Texturing
Substance Painter: Utility map baking
Davinci Resolve: Compositing (Fusion), Editing
Soundly: Sound Design

There is no way my laptop and its cut-down RTX 3060 would ever even let me attempt a VFX-heavy character like this with tons of texture maps and hair follicles, I’m jealous!

Very nice work. Why would you need 62 udims? Id love to know how thats laid out! I used 5 udims for a vew heads and it was tough on my system! Its great that blender can handle that much and 6 million hairs too!
