The mysterious vanishing camera view

I was working happily assembling a scene, checking the renders, and adjusting textures and lighting. I had just finished editing a texture, switched to camera view, and accidentally hit something which made most everything in the cam view vanish. All that was left: my star field and a dashed outline box.

Usually I just switch layers and everything pops back up. Not so this time. I hit some layer buttons and then the starfield disappeared as well. Now, the objects are all still there and visible from every angle except through the camera. A “just for the heck of it” render gives me a blank scene filled with my background color.

I tried deleting the camera and adding a new one. Same problem.
I tried to append/link a new camera from a known good scene. Same problem.
I have tried to compare settings from a “good scene” to this one to see if something obvious were switched off or on, and I’ll be darned, but I can’t seem to find anything. So what’s the simple explanation? Is there a solution to getting the camera “working” again?

Any object can be a ‘camera’. Select your real camera with RMB and hit Ctrl-Numpad-zero.

Thanks! I had hoped it was something as simple as that. What on earth did I hit to change that?

Ctrl-Numpad-zero with another object active. Confusing when unintentional but useful for lining up lamps and such.
