The Newsbreaker alien avatar

Would love some advice on this character. A little history:

  • Started and finished him AGES ago for a project, like 2011
  • The idea is that he’s in some sorta sci-fi city where he shouts out the news of the day. The thingies on his pauldrons would display stock tickers and other news bylines.
  • The project fell through, so he became abandonware. Never finished texturing or rigging or animating him.
  • I’m doing some spring cleaning and, gosh darn it, I do still rather like him
  • However, everything from this era is now WRONG! It was before the age of high quality sculpting and remeshing in Blender, before the age of boolean workflows, before the age of PBR, before Substance Painter became the norm. One of those old files where you start by just appending things in to avoid the old 2.4/2.5 Blender layout, and then start deleting all those old materials from Blender Internal. He was probably the last dude I ever poly modeled, how barbaric.

I’d like to put him out there properly, rigged and textured and whatnot, but I’d do so much of this differently than I did it 12 years ago and kinda want to start fresh. Throw him on the commons somewhere?

I do love the design too, it’s unique, and that makes me wanna see him move. If you have time
Poly modeling that must’ve been something else! How about subd, was that a thing?

LOL, good ol’ subd, the bane of bools. I think I lost the sculpt file with his head. Figure I’ll give him some love as an ambassador for his ancestors, before these newfangled workflows.

Got him into Painter, which I’m sorely behind on

But I enjoy how the work I put in 11 years ago still pays off, in terms of island or vertex color masking
