The next "Second Life"?

Called “LivePlace” it looks like a sort of successor to Second Life, brought to you by one of the guys behind MySpace.

The technology behind this is beyond anything I’ve seen before.

Looks pretty sweet, but I’m not sure I could play another game where everything is shiny and constantly vomits copious amounts of bloom into my eyes. Unfortunately this rules out basically every game that is made now :frowning:

also since it is from a Myspace co-founder I would half expect to see things like “Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred. This error has been forwarded to LivePlace’s technical group”

Holy shit it’s like the matrix. But is it real? And how could you handle so many users?

I don’t know. I’d love to know how they hell they can manage to get hundreds of thousands of people online at any given moment and yet still expect to be functional. I guess we’ll have to wait for it to go into beta or something before we will see what happens. I fully plan on giving a shot as soon as humanly possible, tho. It looks just too cool to pass up. I was a fan of the idea behind Second Life, but there’s too much BS you have to go through to get into that world. This looks a lot more inviting and user-friendly, tho I guess that depends on the interface and such.

The way it looks, tho, you could invite people over to your ‘house’ and work on Blender projects together. The potential for this to be used as a really brilliant sort of global management / networking technology is unreal. Imagine having an animation studio where you can work on a scene, model or whatever, and then hop online and go to the office to just show people right there in realtime what it looks like and get feedback. The tech could revolutionize what’s possible to do with a small group of people from all over the world. You could effectively function virtually in the exact same manner that you would if you were all living a block away from each other.

It’s really sort of exciting to me.

technology at it’s finest. I’ll stick to the crew i go running with every wednesday for now.

this is fantastical

I wonder when we would be able to jack in and actually be in the world and feel and fly and eat virtual food and everything in incredible realism? Playing the ideal version of urban city life would not be fun if we just did it from behind a screen.

At this point it appears that gameplay will be focused on human avatars

Human forms only? That would be quite boring, without cat people and Dragons going all over the place it would be less fun to go around. Though lots of money could be made if I sold virtual versions of my art to decorate apartments and homes with.

If people could vomit bloom, real life would be so incredibly shiny.
It would make everything look so much more realistic.

Well I think they’re shooting for realism first of all. And second of all, people who think they’re really animals(mythical and otherwise) probably aren’t the demographic they’re really trying to attract.

well if you read the comments over there…it seems they ripped off some artist’s work for some sequence.

but they’re claiming their render engine works in cloud computing network…meaning the rendering is splitted in realtime on thousands (if not more) of computers…which make it possible.

to quote in a giant:

“Simulation becomes useless the moment they start to be so complex that they take as long as the real thing to do”

Just think of the implications a simulation like the Matrix could have for the World’s otherkin population, everyone in their true forms interacting with each other:cool:

That is, the downside is that it’s only virtual, but it’d be a good experience, I would never be able to have a simulation of my Dragon parents though, in which it would be stupid if you think having them virtually simulated would be equal to actually being with them.

I was thinking of the implications

Server-side rendering (or do they mean some form of baking)? And what do they mean, ‘no plugin’? Is the client running on javascript?

What the blazes. This OTOY is either one of the most visionary, long-term-goals companies ever, or they’re also hiding a no-latency communications framework for an entire continent (at least) behind their backs.

How do you know? What with the numbers of them these days, it could be a smart business move.

My guess is that they will take your control input, put it into the simulation running on the server and just stream the video output back to you. The bandwidth used would be about the same as streaming a webcam. You should get higher resolutions than a webcam though because normally they are limited by a client’s upstream bandwidth. This will only be limited by the downstream bandwidth. Typical downstreams are 2Mbits = 250k. DVD quality is about 768k so you’d probably need an 8Mbit connection for decent quality.

I just read this article, that is what they intend on doing:

Once we get this technology offline with consumer graphics cards, 3D rendering is going to be much less tedious.

That’s what really got my attention – the new GPU.

The way you put it, it does sound feasible, and even practical within the domain of this application. Shooters probably would be out of the question given turnaround times though.

It does sound like rougher times await SnatchBuckler

Everyone? Trust me, thinking you’re a dragon isn’t a common illness.

The only known cure is pretty intensive.

whoa. I applied.

Well,in the cloud means that the game engine is rendered using a big computer farm, right ?

Sweet

From what I understand they’re actually using multiple ATI GPUs to render everything (or at least they plan to). In which case I can see how something like that could work in theory (as opposed to “hard-CPU” raytracing), but only for a (very) limited number of users.

I really don’t see how something like this can scale in any reasonable fashion. The whole idea behind “parallel rendering” is to have multiple systems (GPUs in this case) working to render a single scene.

That means you need multiple systems for every single user, because from the perspective of each, the scene is different.

So, I wouldn’t hold my breath for “CitySpace”.

However, “LightStage” looks very intriguing.
