Softer more ‘painterly’ version (as is my wont)

A different ‘painterly’ version (as is still my wont, as I can’t stop messing around)

I’ve added this as a ‘finished project’ but I will apologise upfront if this isn’t the last render I upload as I can’t help tinkering and I’m sure I’ll see things I want to change, try some different angles, respond to (constructive) criticism and so on and so forth. Nothing I do is ever really finished, but this is also long beyond a work in progress.

FWIW this is a real place on the Cromford Canal in Derbyshire, England (a couple of my other renders are from the same canal). I walk past this most Sundays and it really is very lovely. The main building is called the Old Sawmill on OS Maps but difficult to find any information about its history. The narrow building to the rear (which is separate even if it doesn’t necessarily look it) is known as the Robin Hood Tower. It is actually a holiday cottage. The hamlet these buildings are in is intriguingly called ‘Robin Hood’ but I’ve found nothing to suggest why. There probably won’t be views from other angles because there are some other buildings in view behind it which are quite nice in their own right but I can’t be bothered to model them!

Rendered in Cycles. All buildings are mine, the topography is accurate using LIDAR data and GAEA. The foliage is from various places; botaniq, maxtree, plant factory, graswald, sketchfab, xfrog, assets bought from blendermarket and cgtrader and some I’ve made myself.

You will see from the reference (below) that I’ve taken some liberties and changed things for artistic licence (mainly so you can see the buildings properly), but hopefully it gives a sense of the place. There is scope for a lot more foliage, potted plants, garden furniture and so on I suppose!
