The *Un*official MythBusters thread

I think this one will be quite interesting. Some of you might have already heard of or watched a T.V. show on the Discovery Channel called MythBusters where two friends/professionals attempt to…well…bust myths. They’ve come to many interesting conclusions, such as (PlantPerson, this one’s for you) evidence that shows different types of music affecting plant growth in greenhouses,Metal being by far the most effective. They also recently developed the first footage of a singer being able to break a wine glass without any amplification. The show answered hundreds of questions concerning all kinds of myths using appropriate scientific explanations for each one.

You may have guessed where I am going with all this. Consider this thread as the answer to all questions and myths.

It’s simple, really. You post a question in bold letters for everyone to see (e.g. Does shaving really make hair grow quicker?) and fellow BA members will attempt to answer your question to the best of their knowledge. I think this thread can get really interesting and spark up some pretty intelligent discussion on many different topics.

Let me know how you all feel about this.

And here’s a question to kick it off (unless you’d like to answer the shaving question:))

A recent video on YouTube shows a motorcycle hydroplaning across a lake. Is this physically possible, given the total absence of friction and the shape of the tires, or was the water simply shallow?

(Note: I found a much better video proving/disproving the first video, but I thought I’d save it for afterwards;))

Enjoy the thread.

He appears to be riding across a flooded field with water only a few inches deep. He would sink in deeper water.

two friends/professionals

IIRC its more like four people.

as far as the motorcycle, it is definitely possible if you are going fast enough and have big enough tires, i have seen it done on four-wheelers. it would be seriously impossible to steer with a motorcycle and keep your balance though.also, since only one tire is pushing him forward, i doubt he would even make it half way before sinking.

i would be willing to bet my lunch on the fact that he is riding over shallow water.

Shaving more regularly makes your hair grow quicker yes. I have experimented with it personally. I practically don’t need underwear any more.

I’ve also seen vehicles speed across water with big tires but bikes tend not to travel too far due to instability as mentioned.

I agree with the shallow flooded field theory. It’s not very deep but enough for him to stay on his toes while ridding across

Will drinking alcoholic beverages from a straw get you drunk any faster?

I love mythbusters = ) It’s my favorite show.

Notice the normal vehicle tracks leading into the water and more obviously coming out the other side = shallow water?

Actually it doesn’t. It just cuts the hair, and doesn’t alter the growth rate. However, the cut hair has a thick end and it looks like it has grown more because it’s darker.

Plus the fact that a 1mm hair which gains another 1mm in a day or two has relatively grown more than a 5cm (50mm) hair which gained 2mm in a day or two.
It’s just a little “optical illusion”.

@ frig: Yeah I forgot about the other two drones:p. Is this the video you’re talking about? (Note to all: Much better than the first video) EDIT: Sorry, I actually forgot to post the link. Here it is.

@ osxrules: Nope the hair just seems to grow quicker because long hair that grows 2mm shows much less than if it grew from no hair to 2mm. as CW said, it’s just an illusion.

@ V7X: I believe it is true as I’ve tried this one myself. It’s probably because the alcohol flows into your bloodstream much slower and allows you to feel the full effect before any of it is eliminated. Someone’s gonna have to correct me on this one if I’m wrong.

Sorry, double post. Here’s something interesting I found out about: Can an unmodified car run on used cooking oil?

I found the MythBusters Vid on YouTube. I think you’re all gonna like this one.

Myth: “Left-handed people are more intellegent than right-handed people”

I thought I’d put this one out there and hear your intellegent comments. I know it sound completely ridiculous. However, quite a few people that I know, who happens to be particularly bright, also happens to be left-handed.

PS: I’m right-handed

is this a good place to insert I’m left-handed and very smart?

I don’t know too many other left-handed people…well, there was a boss I had once, but he was an ignoramus.

I love Mythbusting.

~K

Makes two of us:) I’m left-handed and left-footed in sports as well.

And the reason that myth exists is because left-handed people tend to use the right hemisphere of their brain and thus are more comfortable with logic and reasoning than intuition. Another myth says that right-handed people live longer. Don’t know about that.

All of these have been discussed (ad nauseum) over at the Mythbusters forum. It used to be interesting over there, but now it’s just the same few myths posted over…and over…and over…

Whatever you do, don’t ask about an airplane on a conveyor. You’ll get your @$$ handed to you.

I’ve been there. I think it’s the most unorganized forum I’ve ever seen. On top of that, you can barely understand what the question is since half the members don’t know how to spell:p.

Agreed on both counts. There don’t seem to be any mods over there to delete redundant threads. Sometimes the same myth will appear 3 or 4 times just on the front page alone. Newbs never think to look at what’s already been posted.

Well, here’s another one that I heard when I was a young boy, collecting bullits and any ammunision I could get hold of at the time. I lived in South Africa and it was the late 70’s - early 80’s, and had a substantial collection

Anyway, the myth says that if you hold a piece of paper right up against the barrel of a shotgun, the shot (small pellets) would not actually penetrate the paper, but rather the barrel of the gun would explode.

No, go on, try this at home :stuck_out_tongue:

Um, it will be a weird one: Is it true, that your liver won’t be affected if you get drunk by “putting” a tampon soaked in alcohol in your rectum?

Um, it will be a weird one: Is it true, that your liver won’t be affected if you get drunk by “putting” a tampon soaked in alcohol in your rectum? …

No. Why would it be any different? Alcohol still gets into your blood.
