Hi everyone,
I’ve applied a Light Probe in Volume as shown in th screenshot, however, there have some weird reflection shown on the object, is it correct? or, is any method to resolve the capiotned issue?
Thanks。。。
Try playing with the validity threshold setting (in the probe’s settings), it can do this effect depending on how it’s adjusted.
Probe settings are finicky and very situation dependent. It’s very likely that the best settings will be different for each scene, for every time you use a probe. The settings you use will probably be a bit different unless you have the exact same scene as the tutorial.
Something else that I can maybe think of that might cause this, but I have no proof: maybe the position of the volume was unlucky and some of the probes (the dots) were aligned with surfaces just wrong and caused some artifacts? Does it look different if you move the volume a little bit or change the resolution so the dots are in a different spot?
The weird reflection disappear when I enlarge the scale ot the Light Probe as shown in the screenshot, however, I don’t think it’s a good method for resolving issues. Am I misunderstanding some issue? And I forget to mentioned that the weird reflection appear after I click the “Bake Light Cache” in Light Probe setting…
Thanks…
A problem with volume probes is that they are built as a rigid grid. This means that the outcome depends on where the points happen to be compared with the solid meshes. If a point is in a poor location, like clipping a surface, it can cause issues.
That’s why the probe’s settings contain a bunch of biases and checks, those settings can be tweaked to hide the issues and there tends to be some trial and error involved.
If moving the volume helps, it’s likely that you could also try changing the grid resolution, as that will also cause the points to fall into different locations (ex. use 18x18x18 instead of 16). It’s also likely that just a small change in scale or location would give a different result, instead of massively scaling it like in your screenshot.
Probes are pretty complicated and will not give completely perfect results. It’s a complicated and wonky system and that’s the cost to pay for speed: Eevee is built on a bunch of complicated hacks to render fast while Cycles is straightforward but needs to calculate the full physics of light.
