I’ve watched TLJ twice now. I can’t think of a single moment where they were trying to push some agenda or another on anyone. The only thing that actually managed to bother me was that the First Order should’ve been able to nail the Resistance flotilla, cuz ARTILLERY DOESN’T ARC IN SPACE, PEOPLE! GOOD GOD!
As for the Witcher, yeah, they made a couple of the characters black in a setting that obviously heavily based on eastern Europe. Really, I’m not all that bothered by it. I mean, it’s a fantasy show. I don’t care.
Don’t get me wrong here. I get where you’re coming from. I too find it annoying when a character’s race is changed just to meet some equality agenda. In fact, I think it’s demeaning to the minority groups when this sort of thing happens just so there are some token minorities, and not because it makes sense to the story.
However…
The whole “minorities don’t make sense in a middle age European story” argument is slightly rediculous. You can wrap your head around universes clashing together, causing a mix of humans, elves, dwarves, monsters, and other mythical creatures to coexist… but a black person doesn’t make sense for that “time period”?
I care about original story and if you read any witcher book then you know it’s absolute non sense!
I am far from being alone on this since the reviews are just starting to come up and we can obviously feel netflix paying people to make fake reviews about it.
I dunno why I’m stepping into this minefield, but…
The difference between the examples you used above, and what’s happening here is that Roots is historical fiction, and the Black Panther was made primarily to introduce a black character into a medium where black people weren’t well represented, while Triss and Whatsherface McMagicianlady are pretty open ended characters in a wild fantasy setting who could be played by anyone.
Either way you cut it, either pro or con, it’s much ado over nothing.
Yeah, you can have your opinion, and I can respect you voicing it. But on that same note, I think it’s all panic for the sake of panic. Really honestly, we don’t know why these two women ended up in those roles. Maybe the cast director really liked them. Maybe they thought they were a good fit for the characters (which is kind of a stretch, cuz they were both pretty flat). Out of a cast of 20+, that two of them happen to be black is just, well, it’s kinda hard to work up a conspiracy out of it.
Now if the entire cast was played by Samoan trans lesbians, then yeah, I’d say someone’s trying a little too hard to force a point. But this? Eh.
your not missing nothing i gave it a good shot got to about episode 6 i think and had to cry off don’t think the writing or acting is up too much episode 1 fight scene was well choreographed then i think they got lazy from there on in…
Mandalorian is better baby Yoda is too funny especially when he gets over protective episode 6 or was it seven… anyway i think both are aimed too not overly push your grey matter
my suggestion if you want your IQ too be tested with a tight story check out watchmen gets my vote for best series 2019… also lost in space is pretty cool
I am eagerly waiting for the Dune series to drop. I will also watch this purely for entertainment and not take offense when somebody else’s interpretation differs from my internal manifestation of the author’s world, when I devoured the original books when I was a youngster, many moons ago…
I’m also excited for that. Though I kinda wish they’d stop rehashing the original Dune over and over, and expand upon it. I’d really like to see a House Atreides adaptation.
I watched the show and as someone who read the short stories and played the games it’s really fun to watch all the characters in live actions. Each episode is pretty much a short story from the books. I kinda hopes that they would go for something more original as they have now gone through all the best source material and the following seasons might be much more meandering.
I don’t really get the SJW thing. Sure, sorceresses are majority women and there are black people in some of the main roles, but if you make the show in America it’s often good to build the cast from people who the target audience can relate to. I just didn’t get that vibe from the show that they have an agenda to push.
Cavill was pretty good as Geralt even though sometimes the enunciation was quite lacking. The monster fights were pretty cool. The actress of Yennefer I think did justice to her character.
The CGI was pretty eh, especially the dragon. A 50’s style embiggened monitor lizard would have been an improvement.
Same. I think it’s just becoming a trendy complaint at this point. Like ‘the gay agenda’ used to be. Oh well…
I noticed something a while back. It seems like a lot of movies and shows want to be stage plays. The SW prequels had it real bad. Overenunciation, broad and rigid body language, overly simple camerawork (I know theater has no camera, but constant wide shots and dialog tracking mimic watching a play). Writing this, it occurs to me that both The Mandalorian and The Witcher would be AWESOME on open air stages! On the screen, though, it just seems a bit lackluster…
