I wanted to recreate a drawing I did back in 2014, in 3d.
I’m not entirely happy with the result but wanted to move onto new projects. Plus I learned a lot doing this image.

DId a hell of a job
Nice dude. How did you make his eyes?
I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!
Thanks.
the eyeball including the iris is geometry. I bought an eye object for Maya from Flippednormals store and used the included textures as a basis for the textures on my eye.
There’s a separate object that makes the bulge of the iris area. literally looks and shaped like a contact lens. This has a clear material on to provide the highlight reflection. This object used to encompass the whole eye but it made the white of the eye object underneath too dark even with indirect clamping turned on (the only thing that seemed to improve it a bit).
So the eye object has clear coat on in the material and I used an inverse of the metalness mask to mask the clear coat off the iris area.
I like to give the coloured part of my eyes a metallic look in an attempt to catch highlights better.
A picture being worth a thousand words and all, I rendered the image out without the ‘head’ and moved the contact lens away from the eyeball - which is anatomically way too large but I was following my drawing so…
I would like advice on how to stop clear principled BSDF shaders darkening surfaces behind them? (note how the iris area on the eye is more vibrant without the ‘contact lens’ covering it.
