I try installing a modem driver for Linux but it doesn’t do a damn thing, it was created by SUSE and its a RPM file, the modem I’m trying to get working is a intel v92 HAM plug and play pci modem. Anyone had any luck installing this modem in Mandork ?
Using a winmodem in Linux in much more complicated than just installing a simple RPM file. All the RPM does is install the files needed to run it. Very rarely does it go as smoothly as just installing the driver and using a gui dialer program. Even when using an external modem when no software drivers are needed, it requires a rather good knowledge of the interface to use it.
You’re saying it’s not working, what does that mean? Not being seen on the bus? Driver not being loaded? Or just not working? In Linux… “just not working” is a rather broad statement. I’m assuming the driver is a kernel module. If so, is it even loaded (lsmod) ? Is the proper configuration in /etc/module.conf (?) For the module to load (if it even works) it must be reconigzed on the bus. It should show up in /proc.
The most for sure way if you can’t get the driver to work is to patch the kernel and recompile it with that driver built in. This of course assuming it’s able to access the bus and see the modem to begin with. If you don’t like patching and recompiling, read up on working with kernel modules to get a better understanding of checking how and what’s running and how to insert and remove modules as needed.
Well, there’s errors when I try installing the rpm under linux, even thoe it’s not compile for the OS, I tried it anyways %| And I don’t think I have the knowlege or the modem to compile from source. Does everything have to be ISA with Linux %|
Everything’s not ISA with Linux, just that most old winmodems are.
Also, there are reasons things are compiled for specific kernels and distros.
Go to the link he provided above and read the docs. Or else get an external modem.
I read that a year ago and all it does is explain the differents between softmodem and hardmodem. But just because it’s a softmodem doesn’t mean it can’t work.
I did a google linux search and came up with
Look at this idiot

before you give up, have you been able to find a non-rpm driver file (ie. one that is in the gzip format)?I ask, as I’ve had a similar problem with a Lucent driver (attempted to install from and rpm) and had to seek out a newer driver on the web. Admitadly I ended up finding a newer rpm, which did work with my version of the gcc libraries.
have fun

You got a winmodem working??
Why do linux users always have to act like such a pompous ?
i wouldn’t really call that pompus
i don’t really see how it is

Because he doesn’t believe a Winmodem can work ? I already knew that rockwell can work but who the hell can afford one ?
